Sportube for airline travel, anyone tried?

Hi all,

I am looking for a bag for traveling with my spearfishing equipment. (See the bottom part of my "Beuchat Marlin Revolution length?" thread).

I was originally thinking of a "Mares Pure Instinct Attack" Speargun bag and fitting it with a hard tube since they suggest it.

Someone said a Sportube (http://www.sportube.com/Spearfishing-s/1477.htm) number 1 would be better, has anyone ever used one? I have see several people with one for skis and they are quite big. Not sure how they fair for a speargun and spears + points, it looks like I'd have to pack it with something to keep things from moving around. It is quite heavy also, so it depends on if airline charge by weight or by item for spearguns. I didn't see anything concerning them on various airlines web pages, they have fishing equipment (often specifying poles and tackle) of firearms, which spearfishing equipment is neither.

after experimenting various sorts of travel bags, I finally found the perfect one and its called a travelling Golf bag they are fantastic loads of room and no inquisitive question at custom or check in..its a Golf Bag
 
Not dumb...I've never thought of that. I guess as long as it's not s small island with no golf courses of course, then it would raise suspicion , I'll have a look, any you recommend?
 
It depends on how much gear you want to transport. I have a Sportube Series 2 and 3, as well as this Plano case:

The Plano case, in my opinion, is better than the Sportube Series 1 and will save you some money. You can also fit more than one gun in it, unless you're traveling with big bluewater guns. When I'm doing a short trip and only bringing one gun, I'll use the Plano tube. When I travel with multiple guns, I'll bring the Series 2 or 3, depending on how much additional gear I need to travel with - e.g. float lines, floats, etc.

Traveling with any one of these will be somewhat of a pain, as they tend to get heavy and a bit unwieldy, but using a hard case is the best way to protect your gear. Tell the airline that you're traveling with fishing gear (which you are), and there usually won't be an oversize charge. Watch the weight of the case, though. Filled with gear, you can easily exceed the weight limits, especially with the larger cases.
 
I use the Ogio its a soft sided bag with lots of handles and straps which is to my liking, it has wheels and the zippers are of good quality. But u can look in the hard sides one also.
 
I use the Ogio Straight Jacket it weighs 6 lbs and I pack my speargun in pvc tubes wrapped in my wetsuit. the 2013 one weighs slightly more.
 
I use a sport tube.i can get about 3 guns in there as well as fins and other gear.they are very good but a little heavy when empty , something to thing about when travelling by air.
