Speared a lot in Bahamas with spear and sling - spearguns illegal... Only sources so far are from USA for spear is approx £25 - but shipping of around £60! Must be someone importing these or making them here? Any help much appreciated. Cheers Den

I would think some of these are homemade aren't they?

Can be home made, but not usually. Lots of dive shops in s Florida sell them. B&B shafts are some of the best. Free shafts with floppers for Biller, Sea Hornet, etc work fine for sling shafts.

The home made part comes in the shooter. Best ones are made to the diver, trimmed to fit his/her hand and band diameter and length adjusted for his/her strength.

Worst case try someone who carries Rob Allen shafts. They have 6.5mm spring steel shafts. You can usually find with notches instead of tabs.
Another source may be Mako spearguns

Thanks for the mention! We do sell Hawaiian Sling shafts.

I suppose it is possible to use a (notched) speargun shaft for a sling, but generally the shafts are thicker (meaning heavier and slower) than a dedicated sling shaft. Also, possibly of even more importance, has to do with the flopper. The flopper is different in both size and placement.

A speargun is going to be 2 or 3 or more times more powerful than most slings. Thus, you can not expect the same range and penetration. A speargun shaft has a distance of about 3 inches from the flopper to the tip (just guessing- haven't measured it). While a sling shaft has the flopper much closer to the tip, maybe an inch. That means the flopper can deploy with much less penetration when shot with a sling. Also the flopper on a sling shaft is usually considerably smaller than a speargun shaft, which I assume is intended to promote penetration.
