Hi All,

I was just wondering if you know of any good spearfishing spots in Sri Lanka on the West coast in May if it is allowed!?

The holiday is not booked but I have my cheeky eye on one, hopefully it is worth taking my gear if it is any good - oh and there are no regular shark attacks.

Any info as always will be appreciated.

Cheers

Ryan

Or does anyone have any info on Spearing/diving for the Maldives area?

I am struggling to find any info on the 'tinternet!

Cheers

Ryan

Not a clue about Sri Lanka, went there once but no diving. Do a search on a member called Alison, sadly no longer with us but she did dive there a lot before she was married. There maybe something useful in there

Hi Tunny,

went to Sri Lanka last Novemeber to beruwelia which is 4hrs south of Columbo. If you dive there go carefull, the local dive shops in Beruwela didn't supprt any spearfishing. Some locals that I spoke to offered to take me out on there boat (for a small price of course), but it was all a bit hit and miss. In the end I decided against going with them as they didn't really have a clue what they were on about and only seemed like they were out to make a quick buck. looking back I think it was the correct choice as I came back with my life intact!!!

Meeru in the Maldives where we went was a no spearing zone as the local reefs were nature reserves. But its always worth asking because you never know when the locals can come up with the goods, also the locals speak excellent english so there would be less chance of any translation errors!!

Here's some footage of my visit to the Maldives, also make sure you take some wieghts with you as you can NOT hire them from the dive shops!!!! Rooky Mistake!!

I went back packing on a surfing, fishing, diving holiday to Sri Lanka when I was about 25.
It was pretty war torn is those days with almost half the county being out of bounds.
Some of my surf mates couldn't resist the temptation to visit the more remote surf breaks right in amongst the fighting but I contented myself with seeing dead bodies being washed up in the surf right outside our beach hut!
I did manage a Marlin on the rod, caught from a dugout canoe thing with a 30hp outboard = scary even at 25!
There was a huge shark fishing industry there at the time but it was well past its peak with only a few still being caught & that was 24 years ago!!
Vis was terrible where we where but i did see some biggish moray eels & parrot fish.
Also been to the Maldives but you are not allowed to fish or spearfish unless you are a local.
Only way around this was an organised trip.

Thanks for all your advice, just looked at the weather seasons out there :head

It seems when I was planning on being there is the start of the monsoon season (May)! - Might have to change locations and or timings before I book now.

Unless the start of the monsoon season is not too bad!?

We went in the middle of there summer and it still rained for 5hrs everyday!

turned the water to dirt couldn't see jack!! I would suggest not to be within 2 miles of any river outlets.

Good luck with your plans tunny.
