Static Apnea World Record

8 min 58 sec???

A few months ago I saw "live" on tv a program who had Guinness book of Records officials and the contestant did an incredible static apnea record!!! live!!!!

of 13min+ !!!!!

What is your opinion?

If I recall correctly, the 13 minute record was done using bottled 02 in the breath up....

Yes i looked for it right now. It does do a difference e ;)

Is it possible in this way to condition your lungs by always breathing pure oxygen? Does it give an advantage afterwards when attempting the static apnea with "normal air" ?

thanks

Deftone

This record was done breathing pure O2 just before the static apnea (for 30 minutes).
If I remember correctly it was done by Tom Sietas who is THE world record holder.

Pure O2 gives you an advantage for you static apnea if you start your apnea immediately after breathing pure O2.
After a few minutes you lose all your benefit.
But it is VERY dangerous to try it at home.
There is a thread somewhere in DB.net about this.

Thanks guys for the quick replies :) just wanted to clear it out

Was it Tom Sietas? He's sure to continue making news then in the future!!

Thanks again to all, very kind ;)

Btw, Tom did another O2 record in February. Right now I cannot find the exact time he achieved, but it was over 15 minutes. I believe 15:02.

However, you can see now how such stunts are in fact harming freediving - even d_deftone who is apparently part of the DeeperBlue community since several weeks and saw the stunt, believed that it was regular apnea. People with no experience or profound knowledge are not capable to distinguish between such hyped stunts and the reality. I can imagine that it can lead to more accidents when people try to mimique the attempts. And of course, Tom's own record of 9:58 (or 10:08 in training) looks like nothing for the general public if they saw his 15'+ O2 stunt or heard about it. They often simply do not realize the difference. Same goes for the comming Blaine's stunt, that will be performed under conditions completely different to AIDA competitions (or even the conditions during Tom's training session).
