If I just take one deep breath I can't get more than 1.30 with a static breath hold. I'm bursting for air. Is this just something I have to put up with? i.e does the desperation for air pass or just get worse? Do I just need to put up with the pain or do I have crap lungs!

Try several breath holds over 20 minutes. You should see a dramatic improvement by teh end of it.
The other thing is to try using an oxygen table. It is a series of breath holds with set times for breathing and holding. You should be able to work your way up to much longer holds if you practice regularly.

Could you point me out to the oxygen table? Tried to google it up with no sensible results...

Thanks!

Edit: I've managed to answer the above myself: http://forums.deeperblue.com/beginner-freediving/64959-how-start-freediving.html

+1 for oxygen table but equally important is dynamic apnea to get your body used to the high levels of co2 (which makes your body want to gasp for more air). there are some good threads on here if you have a quick search also check this site out it has some good exercises to do.

This is very helpful discussion. I am just amazed. I will check again and again for further...

Best Regards!

Hi Zed,
Try just breathing normally, no big breaths in before hold, no forced exhaling, hold your breath and wait for contractions.
It took me a while to start holding my breath with contractions, before it felt just like you as if I was going to explode.
