Ive recently bought a small kids pool for static training as the local pools in Sydney are not freediver friendly especially for statics.
At the moment the water temp during the day is 20c and with a wetsuit its ok for a while doing statics without getting too cold. We are coming into winter and i would like to continue using the pool but dont want to spend lots of money on heating it up. So i was wondering what the preferred water temp and or ideal water temp for statics would be.
I was thinking if i should just try to get used to the cold and create a DR static suit to keep my core body temp up while keeping my extremities cool.
Any ideas?

Nat.:inlove

Oh yeh the kids can use it too.

Well, we use a pretty warm pool (~32°C), but most of people in our club use 5mm suits and still get rather cold after an hour of training anyway. Myself, I am more cold resistant and use a 2mm short suit, but sometimes get little bit cold too. On the other hand I know that on the last WC in Egypt, they trained statics in pools with some 15°C, so you can still certainly go on training for some time. Also if it gets colder, maybe you can make the sessions shorter, or cut them into several parts, warming up little bit in between.

I just hope you have a good and trained spotter, and do not train alone when you do your statics in the kids pool.

I do my max statics with no warm up and dont get my kids to spot me often mate so dont worry.:inlove 32c sounds toasty without a 5mm suit. I wonder what the ideal temp would be for a strong DR without getting too cold at the start of the hold and getting the shivers.

Don't get or Do get? In any way, if it just the kids who spot you time to time, every couple of minutes, then you are really risking your life seriously. When training statics you can blackout very easily. Once you black out, it won't take more then some 1-2 minutes (possibly even less) before your brain cells start getting irreversibly damaged, and just very little more before you are dead. So do not risk stupidly and unnecessarily, and either train dry, or with a permanent spotter keeping you by hand or tapping all the time, without doing anything else that could distract him/her from that task.

I am afraid that it is quite individual and the only way you find out is testing it yourself.

No i dont get my kids to spot me.:) Thanks for your concerns.

Are they still getting into the dynamics Nat? When are we going to see the innaugural Australian WeeDiver Championships? :t

.... I know that on the last WC in Egypt, they trained.......

what WC means in the context?
in some languages WC is the short term for wasser closet...is the object in wich we pee at the toilete:p

It probably was with so many people in there over a shiort space of time. Actually come to think of it, I arrived a week early and it was 15 degrees, when everyone arrived it got as warm as 32 degrees. I thought they turned the heat on but you got me wondering now.... :naughty

For me, the ideal temperature for pool static would be about 33-34C. Any amount of cold feeling, or cold water on my face, has a negative effect. I don't know where my dive reflex has gone... :D

And you wearing a (7)7mm+ suit?

Perhaps you shivered it away...

I must be the only freediver who manages to get too cold in a 5mm opencell suit in 27C water! rofl

For me, the optimum temp for statics would be as cold as I can stand to be in it for, hopefully 8mins+. I only wear the bottom of my suit and that is only for flotation. I feel relaxed when my legs float. As for the temperature i prefer very cold water. I regulary do statics in a 32degree pool, but that is just due to pool space. If i could choose I would choose around 15-20 degrees.

My preference for cold temperature is only because I do my max without warmup and on the first hold. When doing this i tend to get warm. On the other hand, when doing long series over one hour I have the tendency to get cold even in a hot water pool, with a suit.

I do a series of statics over one hour, usually taking turns with my buddy. This is one of the reasons why I get cold.

I once meet a girl (Australian) who could even get goosebumps in her face. Same with you?:)

That hasn't happened to me yet. rofl
I shiver a lot though, it looks like a samba!

Yeh i think these are the temps im going to have to get used to ( 15- 20c). With the right suit setup hopefully these temps will be ideal.

Cheers Nat

Come to my pool Nat!

Definately freediver friendly. We keep our indoor at 32+, and we have a 5m deep outdoor pool if you want to play some games etc etc. Also, I work here most days, and if your lucky you can get a free icecream :D

My boss is fascinated by freediving, so you wont get any disapproving looks from us lifeguards :D

Definitely in the "cold as possible without shivering" camp here.

Sometimes I let water into my wetsuit to cool down, half way through a max static attempt. I tend to heat up quite a lot after a minute or two of contractions. Personally, being too warm adds to the discomfort :vangry itchyness factor.
