When doing a static breath hold, do people find it easier or more comfortable to do the static with goggles and a nose clip? Is that the reason for the goggles? Is there any one that finds it more comfortable or easier to do their static without the goggle or nose clip. I'm finding that a mask gets really uncomfortable while doing a static.

Hardhat,

Some reasons why some prefer goggles and nose clip:

-more of your face is exposed to the water (higher dive response -- try doing it with no hood or even no suit if you can manage to stay warm)
-might be easier to do the recovery protocol for competitions
-stay cooler
-less pressure on your face
-appearance: you can look pretty dorky with a big voluminous mask versus nice silver mirrored goggles. People will think you hold a WR. :)

Some people don't use a nose clip (Tom Sietas), others don't use a mask.

Try out all the variations and then stick with one for a while

Good luck!

I use goggles but no nose clip. This is because I don't like to have to breathe through my mouth before or after the static.

if you have a mask or goggles on, you are more comportable in your sorroundings coz you can see everything clearly (therefore your heatrate is lower).
Also, the muscles in your face tend to tense up when your eyes are exposed to the water, that means you are using more energy.
if you are used to a noseclip use it but if not is might be awkward.

Thanks for the comments. I've been doing my statics now with no mask and no nose clip and I'm finding it a lot more comfortable and relaxing and my times are improving.
