Searching for an apnea training utility that did exactly what I wanted, I decided to make my own: Static Trainer is an app for iPhone and Android and also a free pc/Mac utility that'll let you build and run your own customized static tables.

You get full control of your O2/CO2 tables, logging, re-run of logged tables, AIDA-style countdown to each breath hold and customizable audio countdown schemes for the actual breath holds. (There are other bells'n'whistles; but this is the important bits :) ).

The smart phone apps cost money, but the pc/Mac version is free. You might want to check it out before considering investing :)

iPhone appstore

Android market

PC/mac version NB! Requires Chrome browser to work!

Hi Jesper,

It would be great to have a program where you can custom set at which points of time during the static you get "signs" (sound) - e.g. 1st @ 3:00min then every 30'' up to 5:30 and after that all 15''. Or just 30'' and no 15'' signs.
To my knowledge there is no program at the moment which does that. Does the STA Trainer? I unfortunately cannot access it.

Cheers, Veronika

Hi Veronika,

In Static Trainer you select 'how far out' from the breath hold goal you want the count. Using your example, in a progressive static table where you expect to end at eg. 6:00 at the final breath hold, you'd then select the audio count to start 3 minutes before the target time.

The default count interval is 10 secs; but you can select 10, 20 or 30 second intervals.

See the pic below for how the audio setup is organized.

I'm sorry to hear you cannot access the download link - it seems to be working from my end - what is the problem with the link?

Cheers
Jesper

Hello, very glad that you create such a program that it is easy for a training...but i have some questions
the time that each of us hold the breath from what it depends?
for example somebody can hold his breathe for 1 min, other for 2, other for 5 minutes.....
In that case, how to know what table to choose to train myself?
for example i can hold my breathe maximum so far around 2:30 minutes....
is there any suggestion to follow and improve myself?
thank you in advance!!!

How long the individual person can hold his or her breath depends on a great many factors: physical fitness, flexibility, lung capacity, frame of mind, experience, preparation etc.

Some factors are ‘given’, eg. lung capacity which more or less is a constant; but others are adaptable. You can train your all round fitness, you can stop smoking, you can stretch (or do yoga) for increased flexibility, you can set up ideal calm surroundings for your static training – and you can get more comfortable with static through continuous training.

If you look round here on DeeperBlue you’ll find posts describing how people were able to dramatically increase their static simply through relaxation techniques and hitting a good, calm frame of mind. As a hero of mine, Jesper Stechmann (former world champ) says: “accept the contractions and leave them be. The answer is not not to feel the contractions; but to leave them there – right where they are, and then glide on…”.

So – my rookie answer to your questions:

1. I believe that the difference in static ability from person to person is much more a lack of experience and training – than it is purely physical capability. The person with a static of 1 minute probably has not been introduced to static properly – and he has certainly not had any experience with contractions and how to deal with them.

2. As your primary goal is to get a longer breath hold, I would concentrate on O2 tables. Your current max is 2:30, so you should start out with a max. breath hold for the O2 table for 80% of 2:30 ~ 2:00. Do O2 tables with a max of 2:00 until you feel comfortable, that you can add another 10 seconds to the max – then adjust the table and move on :) Once in a while, do a new max test and adjust your tables accordingly.

For a couple of great videos on preparation and how to prolong your static, check this out: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v87uGLqmRgY]Freediving Breathe Up - How to hold your breath longer - YouTube[/ame]

thank Sir so much!!! I appreciate your help and i will try to find out what i can do best by your instructions and the videos!!!

well, i got some results!!!
i try the method that you mention to me...

and now i can hold my breathe, 3:45 seconds than 2:30 that it was when i start....now what should i do? do you think it is my limit?

I bought the app (and have all other other ones from the app store as well) and have some feedback:

Can you stop the screen from scrolling / being able to be dragged?

When you do, the timer stops. I have a timer / lockout on my phone as its a corporate security policy. I just need to touch the screen to keep it active after 5:00 mins.

Also, the audio countdown seems either a bit slow, or out of sync with the number countdown.

Hi Apneaddict

A prioritized change for the next version is an anti lock-screen. I have this working on the iPhone app, and expect to be able to implement it on Android as well.

This should take care of your problem with pausing the timer when touching the screen to prevent screen lock. As a workaround - you could just touch/swipe the screen twice. The timer-halt function is not a stop/reset, but rater a pause/resume one (apart from the stopwatch which actually is a stop/reset function).

The final countdown to the end of each breath hold counts '10-9-8...0, Start Breathing!', but actually starts from 12 seconds out. It's a small thing, but when I'm struggling towards the end, I feel I get a little bonus because I'm given a few seconds 'for free'. I know it's lame; but it has worked for me - that's why the countdown is a little 'off' :)

Thanks for your suggestions and feedback!

Hi Donharus,

You've improved dramatically in just one week :) It is rather unlikely that you have reached your max yet, so my best advice would be to stick with it with training and practice.

Train static when you're in the right mood, do not train because your schedule says you have to; but train when it feels right. Keep as positive and relaxed 'bout the whole thing as possible.

Stick with it, and good things will come.

If you *really* want to progress, search out the nearest freediving club/community where you live, and try real static with a trained buddy to watch over you. Once you get used to the head-under-water scenario, and are able to relax during the breath hold, you'll experience som amazing changes in the way your body responds to static (lower heart rate, the dive reflex, better concentration, more fun).

Finally: a no-brainer - don't train static in the pool without a trained buddy to watch over you!

Best of luck...

Just started with this. Out of interest for spearfishing should I be concentrating on O2 tables or CO2 tables first, or just do a little of both? Can/should I do both on the same day

Also how often should I do these tables, and how many sets, e.g 1xO2 three times a week or 3xO2 three times a week etc?

Sorry for the relative newbie questions...

...just found loads of useful stuff on the web, I guess trying to work out what mix of tables to do during the week is the only one left (after reading do not combine tables on the same day, only do one set of eight etc.).

Maybe i got that record (3:45) and i didnt know it because i didnt check it before and it came after a week of training with the program....of course i will keep training...i like that application and it is safe...

I wish to be in a free diving club but where are live we dont have....but i was lucky once i saw a seminar about black out...i know the dangerous and that is the reason i never check my static apnea under the water......
thank you very much once more for your reply and your advices!!!

Static Trainer smartphone app

15.10.13 - Important! Bug in CO2 tables when pausing table!

If you start a CO2 table and pause the program, it will either crash or switch to the last O2 table used. A fix has been implemented and is going out to the app stores asap.

Workaround: don't pause/resume the program once started.

I apologize for any problems :-(

Cheers, Jesper

Nice app. I love the customizable count down option. It helps me not to bail out the hold on a hard day. Other similar applications don't have this option.

I have some suggestions for future releases. It would be nice to have the number of current hold/rest shown while the table is running. IMHO pause should be activated by double tap, it would prevent accidental stopping of the table.

Hi Marcin - thank you for your feedback.

Re. the number of current hold/rest - I am not sure what you mean. I have attached a picture from a running O2 table: below the countdown it shows the current cycle and how many cycles total plus current breath hold/rest duration. Is this not what you meant?

Re. pause double tap - very good idea - I will put it in the to-do list :)
