Hi all,

I am new to this forum and also somewhat new to freediving. I downloaded the apnoe trainer created by one of your members and its helped alot now I can achieve a dry static breath hold of 2:30min so far. But when I try to do wet statics I can barely get to 1:10min? I am not sure if I am activating the dive reflex correctly(if there is a correct one).
Also is it good to do a static and a dynamic on the same day?

Any advice would be great thx,
spriggan

Some info on [ame="http://forums.deeperblue.net/showthread.php?t=57641"]this[/ame] thread.

If you are not pushing yourself too hard, static and dynamic on the same day should be ok. Some freedivers do short statics as a preparation for a dynamic session. I don't think doing max statics and dynamics on the same day is a good idea. Your body needs time to recover after a max attempt, whether static or dynamic.

Maybe you are getting cold in the pool? This would affect your static time. Some people find wet static easier, and others find dry static easier.

Lots of useful beginner info [ame="http://forums.deeperblue.net/showthread.php?t=64959"]here[/ame].

my wet and dry statics are so different it isnt funny, but i dont generally train with wet statics (lacking a dive buddy for that usually)

dry = 4:57, with contractions coming in at 2:50
dry, no breathup is 3 mins flat, with contractions at about 1:50

wet =2:10, with contractions at 1:10 :(

i think that it all has to do with training, if i was to spend more time in the water, im sure i could get my wet static times a lot closer to my dry, i just dont feel as comfortable holding my breath just floating there. yet, ive been underwater for about 1:30 i'd guess, doing aspetto's or slow search hunts, i allways feel more comfortable after being in the water for about an hour or so, and my dives allways reflect it. so dont feel too bad about your wet statics being so much shorter, just try to enjoy them :)

I think that i have an aswer as to why you r wet and dry times differ so greatly. It has to do with a reflex called the mamalian dive reflex that basically slows your heartbeat up to 50% to slow consumption of oxygen. It also shifts blood away from extremities toward more important regions mainly heart bran and lungs. thats why your times diff greatly

hope that helps

Thanks for the replies guys, I have read the suggestions and I think its probably that I am not just as comfortable in the water as I am Dry. So I guess I need to spend more time in the water and learning how to use the MDR properly. I will update soon if anything changes.

Thank you so much.

I have the same problem. My times are very close to yours as well. My PB is 5:07 and I did a static in the pool and I came out with contractions around 1:00 as well. I was very shocked.

However I didn't work myself up enough and the pool is always a bit on the cold side :(. So I imagine that doesn't help. I also don't have a buddy with me so I never push it at all.

Hi all,

Just wanted to let ya all know that I increased my wet static time from 1:10 to 2:00! Thats almost better than my dry static, but I hope to beat it soon. :D

Thx all for the advice!

Wow this amazes me. I am new to the forum and talking to other freedivers, for me it has always been a private activity.

Until a couple days ago when I decided to start timing myself I am convinced my static apnea on the surface was about 45seconds. In cold water under 10m up to 2 minutes without pushing trying for time, but tryin relaxing, including swimming around with fins.

I know when doing breath holdin contests as a kid I had the same experience I could barely hold my breath above water, but underwater I could stay longer than my friend down at the bottom of the -9foot end of the pool.

On day two I can do 90 seconds surface, but it so much easier for me to hold my breath underwater, even in the bathtub. And for me cold water (14-17degress makes it easier.

It is funny how different people are. For me water and especially depth make it more comfortable to hold my breath. I guess the term is "packing" where you fill you lungs till it feels like your chest and diaphram are stuffed. I find extremey uncomfortable on land, but drop -10m and my chest is comfy. I get even shorter static time on land when I do that.

And maybe too much body fat makes me more comfortable in cold water.

Water comfort is itself a funny thing. I find it always easier to relax in the water, in fact when I have headaches, I go and fill the bath and stick my head underwater and hold my breath, and find it relaxing.

When I watched a german interview about David Blaine's stunt, the german apnea diver said that one can hold his/her breath definetly longer underwater. He said that if the water reaches the nose and mouth area, you automatically can hold your breath for longer, especially in cold water. Guess he was talking about the diving reflex...

Anyway, maybe the reason for the big time differences for wet and dry is relaxing? I bet many are swimming/doing dynamic apnea before the static attempt and thus are fatigued. Sometimes you might even not realize it yourself becouse after a little resting period you might feel really good again. But your body needs time to recover.
