Static what *helps* (list of suggestions)

Thread Status: Hello , There was no answer in this thread for more than 60 days.

Static breath holding, at least on land, is very quick and simple, but can get quite mind-boggling. I haven't been training for years,but I have techniques that help a lot!

--- I think holding your breath while running is the hardest and maybe the quickest results. First you need to get a stop watch, some place that is long enough for a quick sprints, and your will power. hold your breath and then start the stop watch, run as fast as you can! keep on going.. this will take power and when you start to feel like it's harder for you to run keep on going untill you feel like you can go no more. you will be breathing very hevly for awhile,but it should go away in seconds. Oh yeah, don't forget to stop your watch :duh then find out how much you ran and how quickly.. try that again in a few minutes and DO IT AGAIN. try not to go farther, but run quicker...when you feel like you are reaching that point where it is getting harder go more! well don't get too far... like samba/BO. just keep on doing that.. only 4-5 times a day because trust me it is very hard.

--- Walking while holding your breath and counting the paces. simple,right? could be ^_^;; hold your breath and count the paces...10..30..60..80..110.. and then stop(that's how much i started with.. you may want to do less?) then get one minute waiting period.. A.K.A brake time rofl. then go again... 10..30..60..80..110.. do that 6-10 times or so and call it quits. incresse the number of steps each day( i did 110 and then 210 steps),but time doesn't matter. (if you find this at 60%-80% of max breath hold..then it will kick in ;-).

--- Push-ups while holding your breath. haven't personally used this before,but a buddy told me it works/helps a little. it also makes you buff!

**whenever you are either runing or walking don't push yourself too much! have a buddy your first time, and PUMP YOUR ARMS AND LEGS(maximume C02 usege)

*** i would suggest you either walk/run once a day since it takes a lot of you,but i suppose if you do one in the moring and one in the afternoon it will be okay :) .

--- Breathing patters, yay! inhale 1 second,hold 5 seconds,exhale 20 seconds, or whatever. this decreese your heart rate i belives by claming your body. to this how ever many times... before you hold your breath.. i may be missing something,but it's simple lol.
 
Pushups wouldn't build muscle that much, unless you use some extra weight. Besides, muscles also buffer co2, so for someone who has their limit in co2 tolerance rather than hypoxia, it might actually help (or so I've heard).

Now, one of the most useful single tips I can give for static is: don't eat anything for at least 3-4 hours before the attempt and even before that, for at least 12 hours, eat very lightly if at all.

You'll also want to be well rested, ie. have at least a day or two to recover from all this apnea running and what ever...

Do a lot of LONG attempts at or close to your limit. This is helpful for me anyway. Nothin will prepare you more for the task than to train what you will do. Both mentally and physically. Its when you venture into the onknuwn the hard phase starts. THink of it. A CO2-table is nothing but slow breathing if you compare.
 
mine would be to drink a LOT of water in the couple of hours before you do static and to make sure you are definitely warm enough in the water. And have a buddy you trust and a good system for communicating while you are down there.

stupid question - sorry - but: For CW it's clear, but how does this effect your Statics ?

One thing hydration is very useful for is preventing packing blackouts. But there is such a thing as too much water, especially without proper care of electrolytes...It's a complicated problem Eric F refers to as "Cardio Vagal problem" or something like that. Basically a horrible feeling right in the start of a static when you think your heart is going to either stop or dig it's way out of your chest...

I just find it helps me - not entirely sure why.

Someone told me recently that the reason clubbers and people who take ecstacy, speed etc drink loads of cold water is that it slows the metabolism. Maybe that's why.
 
push ups help because it uses A LOT of O2 which will build your C02 talarance up :) at least for me lol... i do not eat like one before i do a major breath hold..it helps not sure why though.. and push ups dont build any really lol but ive gotten stronger ;-) it's mostly for the c02 consumption
 
Things that affect my static...

-Not eating beforehand. I do my best times when I'm hungry.
-Drinking enough water, but not too much.
-Doing tables for CO2 and O2 tolerance
-Getting the right breathup
-Doing the right number and length of warmup statics
-Having the right interval between attempts
-Not being too cold or too hot
-Keeping fit
-Being a bit tired. I do my best times when I'm tired!

There are probably more that I haven't discovered yet, and things don't always work the same for everyone, but it's worth trying to find out what works.

I find that although being hydrated is important, drinking too much water has a definite negative effect. I don't know why.

As for being tired.

Sometimes I can find this helpful too, but you have to distinguish between different modes of being tired. Being tired, but rested (if that makes any sense) is the way to go. If you are rested but still tired it helps relaxation. Being tired from to little sleep or something is totally wrong (for me)
