Martin Stepanek launched a new website announcing he is going to attempt to break current world records in three disciplines: Constant Weight with and without fins, and Free Immersion.

Martin ?t?pánek - world record 2009

The original press release took in view the recent new WR of Herbert and Will in Deans's Blue Hole, except of the last one of 120 meters CWT. Martin still speaks about 114 m as the current record, so I am curious whether he is going to update the depth, or whether he concentrates on the other two disciplines instead. Suspense!

I am looking forward anyway. Good luck, Martin!

So it looks like Herbert is going to be challenged in practically all disciplines in the next weeks - Musimu just announced his No Limits attempt to 220 meters. In the same time, I think Herb is going to try to set a new Variable Weight record too.

Good luck to all of them!

Let the game begin!
Now starts the battle, Herbert achieved to much so now everyone want to have a piece of this. They really have to put all the strength and motivations cause the numbers are really big.
Especially the CWT and NL..these are the disciplines i'm looking closest. Wonder will Martin change his CWT to 121:)?

The depths are amazing and it's a real testimate to the human body, but....are they now pushing too far? There are now so many top freedivers that compete in all the discaplines that i really hope it's not being done for the wrong reasons. At what point do we say enough is enough before something tragic happens to one of these althletes? I met Herb after his 214mtr NL dive, he was so inspiring and left me craving ever more for this sport. Please may their challenges be safe and i pray the ocean accepts them for the right reasons.

Let them try....

I think Herb might hold these for a while, at least the CW....

The wrong reasons? NLT is nuts, but risk in CWT can be pretty well managed. In any case, nobody can say 'enough is enough' except for the athletes themselves. I'm comfortable with what I'm doing, and it seems Herbert is too. I hope Stepanek has a go at Herbert's record, he's been a bit of an unknown quantity over the last couple of years.

Unknown quality? Not sure what exactly you mean, Dave, but since 2001, Martin does at least one World Record each year (Apnea mania). Only in 2008 he missed his anual WR due to bad luck - first he could not do his CWT attempt because of bad weather, and then his CNF world record (that he did not train for) was later annulated because of rules misunderstanding. So I would rather tell that so many years with regular world records speak about a quite well defined quality - I think you won't find many freedivers who show such stable high performances for such a long period of time (except of Herb). Not even Natalia Molchanova or Tom Sietas have such a long and regular record history behind them, as far as I see it in ApneaMania database.

"unknown quantity", Trux! It's a turn of phrase, meaning it's been hard to know what he could have done had he really pushed himself like Herbert has. Of course Martin is a great diver, but it seems that his recent performances haven't shown what he is capable of. He doesn't compete often, either. In Sharm '07 I couldn't help thinking "what would Martin have done if he was here?" And then he was sick at last year's team competition, so those performances didn't tell us much either.
