Hi all,

Something happened and I cant find what is it…

Before leaving for vacations on around august 10th I was full of excitement physically and mentally ready to make a new personal best. I was just receiving my new monofin and I was ready for a 15 days playing in the water.

So I went down to my cottage next to the beach and immediately started snorkeling and diving first with my Nemo monofin, I’ve made some 2km surface swims with central snorkel holding a foam kickboard for stretching purposes and in order to make my technique better. Then I’ve tried my new monofin, a leaderfin hyper pro, doing again some fast surface swims and dynamic. Generally I was very kinetic and excited with the performance of the new mono. Eventually, on the last days I felt like I had no more power and felt exhausted. Felt like my lungs were leaky and couldn’t take full breaths through the snorkel. The feeling on my chest was like you are trying to inhale through a leaky snorkel. I started having chest pains in the middle and having a feeling of something “heavy” on my chest. I even could not stand the seat belt of my car more than a 15mins as it makes me feel very uncomfortable. Its a strange feeling. This makes me feel like an old man unable to dive struggling for air and feeling like shit in the chest area…

I was afraid that it was a heart attack or something wrong with my lungs. Upon returning to the civilization I was directly went to the hospital directly. They made me chest radiography, electrocardiograph, heart ultrasound, blood test and they found nothing wrong. I also went to a respiratory doctor and he make me a spirometry and he also found nothing. He gave my some light tranquilizer pills which I never put them in my mouth (don’t want to take such kind of pills).

I’ve stayed out of water for 2 weeks to feel better and day by day was going better but I was never felt like rock just like I was before. I’ve started make some dives again and voila the chest pain/feeling was started raising up again…

It’s a very strange feeling, not a burning, its not happening when I full inhale or full exhale or when taking stretching poses but it is generally there as a heavy shit on my chest not allowing me to breath normaly, not allowing me to relax or dive… When I’m sleeping I’m ok, I don’t feel any pain but when I get off my bed gradually is coming up. It is always there harder when I am in the water lighter when I am calm but its always there. Even I fraid to swim cause I think and feel that I will drawn…

Does anyone have an idea what is going on??

Before, I had equalization problems for many many years which have managed to partially resolve with jala neti, sutra neti and other techniques. Now I have this….

I’m disappointed…

P.s. I have never dive more than -12m cause of the equalization problems and never packed..

Probably in all that time u stressed too much you chest muscle, and now they need to rest a little,, that is the first thing i can think. Usually who goes spearfishing has this chest problems but 99% of time is caused by realoding the speargun.

Have you been to a diving physican? It could be related to the exercise, but this might be something a diving physican should look at. Alternatively, you might ask your question to Doc Vikingo: Doc Vikingo's Scuba Clinic :: Index

Thanks guys.. Have asked doc vikingo too and waiting for response.

Meantime, anyone else guys any idea please??

I once had 'chest pains' when I was in my early 20's...Went to the doctor, ordered all the routine ECG/EKG tests, etc. When he asked me if I feel the pain at night when I sleep, I said no. He breathed a sigh of relief and told me chances were very good I've strained something muscular. It ended up clearing up in a week or so and I've been fine ever since...Sounds like you've strained something muscular...

Having said that though...Go get it checked out - never play the self-diagnosis game on the web...

Hi, I'm experiencing a similar situation. I'm a recreational free diver from Dominica. Around 4 months ago I was diving only on weekends, and on my last session I believe I push myself to hard going from -50 to -55. I believe is undertrained. The night after the dive I started with pain on the middle of my chest, I could feel it under my sternum. It has been 4 month plus since that last dive and the pain is diminished but in my case it worsen during the night and I feel it stronger in the morning as I wake up. I went to regular doctors for check up and everything looks fine.

I don't know where to go with this issue, and if I'll ever dive again.

I'll appreciate your guidance if possible.

Thanks.

Antonio.
