I got a new speargun project cooking and was going to try a slim, lightweight part wood part laminated glassfibre/carbon thing.Im thinking of using a pine roundpole as "spine" and strenghten this with glassfibre or carbon.Carbon looks really cool, but its expensive.Question is, how much stronger is it? does the strenght and coolnessfactor outweigh the pricediffrence? I was thinking a double layer of 160 gm2 glassfibre weave on a roundpole thats 34mm,but planed down to ca30x 20mm on the end, could I go with one layer of similar carbon "cloth".Im planning a 80-90 ish midhandle singleband, probably 18 or 20mm rubber, this will leave about 5ish mm on each side of the band where it goes through the mussle, will that hold the band pressure?
Got a trigger mech, band and spear comming in the post so there will be pictures soon,I hope...

I was just about to start a new thread to ask about winter projects but you've beaten me to it! I used a single layer of carbon on the center rail laminate of my last gun, mainly for looks, and it came out nicely. The trouble encasing somthing like pine with carbon/glass is movement of the wood. You could try a foam core like a surfboard? I too am gathering materials like a squirrel for winter. I'll be using marine ply and carbon to make a 65 gun for night/low viz conditions and possibly another 85.

Speargunbuilding, its highly addictive. I know pine will swell and shrink with the humiditylevels, but if its completely sealed with epoxy? Then again, I started thinking of an alternative mussle design ,so I might change the roundpole plan before I get properly started.I will defenetly not use unsealed oak again, as one of my guns started coming apart in the laminate after some long sessions... Marine ply, well, thats a thought...hmm... You would probably need several layers of carbon/fibre on this foam waferstuff for strenght, yeah?
