Ok guys, i have a bit of a problem.

I am trying to lose a bit of weight, and i think that funning/cycling is gonna help me do that a lot, but its conflicting with my freedive training that im just starting. Ive been running and doing pushups and whatnot for a few weeks now, and since then it has been easier for me to black out while packing, and i did some reasearch and found that is common with running. So my problem is, i still ant to be in shape and lose weight, but i want to progress to over 6:00 apnea, being around 5:00 to 5:30 right now. I am doing some apnea walking, and i think that will help me get there a bit, especially if i stop running a lot.
I want to know what you guys suggest for me to do, where i can both lose weight and continue my apnea progress. I think im going to do my pushups/situps apnea, so that should help, but i dont know about running, maybe run shorter distances at a higher intensity? I also dont want to raise my metabolism too much if its going to negatively affect my freediving.

thanks in advance for your replies

ps. I only want to lose maybe 10 lbs of fat max, and does anybody know what a good low body fat % is?

hi,

if losing weight is a priority i´d focus on that first. also you will build a good cardiovascular base. after maybe 2-3 months you might start getting a bit more specific, like doing intervalls or generally doing more anaerobic work.

if you are into statics good carediovascular fitness (low resting heartrate) is a good thing. but as you mentioned low bp can lead to early bo`s. but there are ways to compensate.

i never found easy training (2-3 times a week) being bad for my freediving. maybe take 2 days off after running before a static session.

just my opinion ;)

I sometimes find that I can't take much packing because of a change such as doing more fitness training or being in a hot or cold environment. It always gets easier if I pack often so I am used to it, and soon there isn't any trouble.

I black out SO easily now from packing and stretching - I never used to.

Intrigued - I guess this is the same problem as I have also been doing a lot more cardio training than I used to. I can make myself black out or samba by stretching in a just a few seconds - great new party trick.... and one that had me lying across my car bonnet whilst trying to pack stretch in NDAC carpark this weekend!! (luckily I had the music up loud and no one heard the thud!)

I no longer pack more than a couple of times for an actual dive - far too risky!

Yeah, I pass out extremely easily from packing too. Could that have something to do with being in good shape?

The first time I totally blacked out was when I was house sitting at a friends. I was standing up, started packing, then I was kneeling, then I woke up with my knees and neck on the floor with my arms sprawled out behind me (I looked like Christopher Reeves attempting yoga). The funny part was my friend's lab nose to nose with me giving me a really funny look. What a sight to wake up to!

So yeah, I am always really careful when I start packing now, and I never do it before a dive. Although I usually wake up pretty quick...er...I think. :)

I hadn't made the connection between fitness training and tendency to blackout/samba from packing or hyperventilation, but now that I think of it, it is probably correct. I sometimes feel faint from getting up suddenly, which hadn't happened for a long time until I started going to the gym. (When I was 12 or 13, I used to nearly black out almost every day, just from getting out of bed in the morning. This was partly because of the change of posture and partly because getting up early is a tremendous strain for me)

Fortunately I have never blacked out in a standing position and fallen over - I wouldn't like to wake up sprawled on the floor after overpacking!

Going to the gym seems to have a good effect on my statics though - yesterday I did a dry static PB of 5:32, and that was on the same day as the gym!

Both, but mainly weights. I also go swimming occasionally.

Well, I don't think you have to stop running. Just make sure you get enough rest between your freediving and your "weight-loss" training. The running will eventually make you VO2-levels higher, which should improve your freediving as well.

You should start with basic cardio: longer runs (60-75 mins) at a low intensity(70-75% of max hart rate), which will give you more small bloodvessels in your muscles and also better oxygen up-take. Preferably in the morning before breakfast, if you want to loose weight. After that period you could start with shorter runs at a high intensity, which will give you better lactic tolerance.

Your metabolism gets higher during long runs, but not after. It's the opposite with high intensity runs. More musclemass will also increase your metabolism, so keep the reps at 15-20 if you are lifting weights.

What is a good bodyfat% depends on your height and weight. Generally it's in between 15-20% for men.

Good luck!
