how thin do wetsuits go? ive been toying with the idea of getting one, the water here is never cold enough to need a wetsuit, but those little stingy creatures out there can get very irritating, especially after about 10 or 12 stings in a few hours.. how do they hold out to poking around in holes? ive got a few scratches on my arms when searching for lobster, would the wetsuit material live up to diving like that? ive never used one/seen anyone using one here, so i cant ask any locals for advice (the scuba guys use some short armed/legged suits, but i get jellyfish on my arms a lot so they wouldnt be much help)

Maybe the Omer Dahlak is good for you: it's only 1,5mm thick, with ocean blue camouflage, protection on Knees, chest and forearms. It's also cheap: about 100 euro here in Italy (surely more expensive for shipping in barbados).

PS: are those stingy bugs at the origin of your fantastic nickname? (my nickname comes from what i had for lunch the day I registered on DB)

Sorry, i posted the link in italian: this is the english one:

There's no need of many words anyway: i think that 1,5mm Dahlak is one of the thinnest spearfishing suit of the market, designed for hot tropical waters (not for tuscany: presently i'm using a 6,5mm)...

Those Riffe suits are pretty cool (no pun intended); really they're good. I've been using myself a Beuchat full jumpsuit, Tropik 0,5 mm. Originally devised for scuba, it has proved good, in my case, for waters 27°C plus, if weather is fine. If it's raining or windy, it can get cool after 2h30 minutes of freediving.

1mm??? 0,5mm??? didn't know such thin suits exist.
Miles, curious: how do those lycras work in reef hunting (i mean: scratches on rocks, coral, jellyfish and so)?

Cruising past a reef with one of these and you turn back to collect all the epileptic fish...

thanks all, i think for the time being i may get a rashguard type shirt, till i can afford some stuff i need to get before i get a full wetsuit :)

Sickbugs, I nightdive in a full suit that is a 3mm body and 2mm legs & arms. It's too warm for days though, unless you open the back zipper a lot. I suggest a 2mm at most for days.

My suit is and old scuba suit and it's held up real well to the reef abuse - actually, that's the main reason I use it - to protect from fire coral when pulling bugs.

i had the lycra suits for body surfing and they will not hold up to barnacles and mussels. believe me, after you ruin a $120 suit that you purchased with lawnmowing money, you will be very careful about what you walk on. do not go down the path i went, invest in one of the riffe 1mm suits, from what ive heard, they are supposed to be really good and neoprene is more durable than the lycra stuff.
