Following several threads, it has been suggested to open up a fund raise to support the completion of Sky Christopherson's The Greater Meaning of Water, a 45 min. Amorgen Pictures production. Recently, it was announced by Christopherson here on Deeperblue that postproduction has closed down due to lack of funds. According to the film's website, the production currently has a financial shortage of USD 36.000. With this ammount, the film would see completion, but no sponsors was found within a reasonable time frame.

So with this post, I will attempt to host such a fund raising through my otherwise inactive PayPal Account.

Why the heck trust me with your money?:

My name is Christian Heckmann Engelbrecht, I'm 30 years old and I live in Copenhagen. I have been freediving for some ten years now, I'm an official AIDA judge (level C in learning) and I have been working with the official AIDA world ranking lists for a couple of seasons now.

My only goal with this fund raise is to see the completion of Sky Christopherson's film. If I should suddenly 'disappear' with any funds, there are several DB members in here who know me personally and WILL seek me out with iron clubs targeted for my knee caps!

If people have transferred funds to my account, and for whatever reason the fund raise is called off, I will return every single transfer to its originators (preferably through PayPal accounts). If any other fund raise is initiated that can assume the role of this one better, I will transfer everything to it.

During the process, I will keep DB's forum continously updated on the process of the fund raise. I'll be happy to create a continous list of contributors and the size of their contribution, unless people request anonymity. If the fund raise goes all the way, I'm sure Mr. Christopherson wouldn't mind including such a name list in some 'special thanks' entry in the credits of the film.

Perhaps Mr. Christopherson could post in this thread and disclose in better detail exactly what Amorgen Pictures needs the $36k for. Personally, I have no idea.

As I understand, DB has in the vicinity of 12.000+ registered members. I share no illusion that all these will support such a fund raise. But if let's say 500 would, $36k gives an average of USD 72 for each party.

Any support (from say, 5 bucks and up) can be transferred to my PayPal account on the E-mail address c.h.engelbrecht@gmail.com. Please note on the transfer 'Support for completion of Greater Meaning of Water'.

For starters, I have myself thrown in USD 100. I'm personally curious to see if this is actually possible.

Feel free to forward this message to other apnea communities on the Web.

Thank you very much, Sir. :)

One very important detail that donators should be aware of is that PayPal charges a sum for transfers. fogish originally donated $55, and PayPal har charged $2.45 of that. Don't know if that's a fixed ammount or a percentage of the transfer. Just so you are aware of it.

There is a percentage charge, but there may be also a minimum charge for small transfers - the conditions vary in each recipient land. Better than using the direct fund transfer, use an e-check - there is no charge at all. However, the e-check option may not be available in all countries (I know it is available in US accounts).

Sorry to ask such a silly question - but how can I do such a transfer to your PayPal account? Do I need a PayPal account by myself?

Alright, I laid down $100 with maxed credit cards and a very VERY cynical general outlook on life. If I can do that, then we should have no trouble raising the sum :) (dropped the average a little there too)

It's a heart warming cause, but I remain cynical about this too. What they really would need is a big company or large individual sponsor to step up. Like a freediving equipment maker or...I don't know...Someone with a film company and an interest in freediving who just has a habit of sponsoring record attempts...I wish there was such a person :)

Surely this project would be interesting for companies like Cressi, Aqualung, Suunto, OMER etc...?

It would be the easiest. I could of course accept donations to a personal bank account, but offhand I'm not too comfortable with that for some reason. Also with PayPal, it'd make it easier to return donations if this should be necessary, 'cause accounts are identified through one's E-mail address.

It's not too difficult opening a PayPal account, or to transfer sums to it through standard means, eg. a credit card.

In the first 8 hours of the fund raise, we have had five donations. With that current rate, it would actually be possible to hit 500 donations in little over 30 days.

So tell your friends. And family. And bosses. I will note businesses donating.

Thanks for the information. I will try it.

Just an idea:
Being an administrator of a forum by myself, I know that it it not much effort to send an email to all forum members. Perhaps somebody can convince Stephan do send an email to all members about the existence of this thread.

Would be nice to see a commitment by the maker of the movie that if we raise amount xy, then he will finish the movie. It would raise the credibility of the whole thing I guess and make more people donate. I already donated BTW :).

Fund raise update June 28th

Status after first 24 hours of the fund raise:

Total number of contributions: 8
Total accumulated sum: $454.07
Ultimate goal ($36k) reached: 1,26%

I have been in mail contact to Sky Christopherson and encouraged him to post info in this thread, so hopefully we'll see him here shortly.

Again, I encourage people to inform friends, family, lovers, employers, freediving companies, the Herberts, the Tanyas, the Umbertos, and other interestees, and tell them about this fund raise. Cross post to other forum sites. Hijack an advertising air plane. Grab the microphone from Regis. Anything.

Let me know if you prefer anonymity from this list. Thank you all very much for your contributions.

I'm new at this sort of thing, so I'd better ask: Should I keep making a donator's list with people's real-world names? I've already been fragged for it in my PM box.
The reason I wanted to display people's names was 1) a token of appreciation and 2) I was hoping to find names like Will Winram or Herbert Nitsch et al on the list as the fund raise progresses.

What are your opinions?

If somebody makes a donation he can put his name or nickname (if it should be published) into the infobox at PayPal. If there's no name or nickname, you shouldn't publish it.

Well, PayPal doesn't work like that. I get people's real names in the transaction. I have so far, anyway.
In the first post of this thread, I did note that people can inform me if they wish to donate anonymously, but people might miss that at a quick glance.

I mean the place where you can enter (optional) notes.
You could enter: 'Support for completion of Greater Meaning of Water / rbsub'.
