Would a 3mm surf hood like this be adequate for spearfishing in 9-14˚C water or would ya's recommend a 5mm dive hood?:t

I would suggest a custom 5 mm suit instead of a scuba suit/surf suit for those water temps if possible. If you can try a 7 mm as you lose a majority of your heat from your head so the extra warmth might be worth it to you depending on how long your sessions are.

sessions will be short and im happy to stick with my 5/4mm suit. I find it warm enough

The thing about spearfishing is that it's not an active sport like surfing and you will get cold very quickly. If your not keen on spending the cash on a proper spearing suit then go with a dive hood for now but I guarantee you'll be cold after an hour as opposed to still being warm six hours into a hunt

In those temps a 5mm is a minimum, and get a full suit with no detachable hood as water will leak in between the body and the head. It makes a big difference and confort is important for you to enjoy your sessions. Opencell inside if possible for the suit, just depends on how deep your pocket is :)
