Hey guys,
I'm a dude from Rhode Island that enjoys surfing bigger waves. I'm trying to maximize my enjoyment by not being as out of breath on big wipeouts and I want to explore the world of being good at deep breathing and breath holding and I was told this was the place to go. At the moment I'm looking for a training guide of some sort, maybe a book, about breath holding techniques and such. Here's a video that shows some of the exercises I think will be useful so that you can get a better context for what I'm looking for. Thanks! http://www.surfline.com/video/premiu...-holding_97011

Well come to the board

On this forum is a huge amount of (breath hold) Xcersises &links to them.
How ever From the clip, measly surf Xp &white water kayaking I think you will have to tweak the Xcersises, since they R geared towards relaxed breath holding. Fe. make apnea walk a interval apnea run instead or instead of static breath hold: 1 st relax like U would while waiting for the set. 2 nd do dozen pushups really fast &dozen burbees. 3 rd Take a 1 fast inhalation &drop to the floor to a fetal position &roll from side to side while holding your breath. repeat 3 rd &try not to black out
:D

The regular Xcersices may still B helpfull...

Welcome to DB @Patrick Geddes - I hope you'll find a bunch of interesting information here!

Two things i'd suggest would be:
  1. Take a course - the two big US agencies (FII and PFI) both teach Waterman/Surfing Survival courses:
  2. Book wise i'd suggest two books - the Manual of Freediving and Breatheology
Obviously tons of info in the forums so browse around and ask questions in the Freediving section.

Hope that helps!
