A buddy and I have this grand idea! This might sound a little crazy or childish, but what the heck, it'd be a blast.

In order to make it work we need quite a few people to join in and split costs...it wouldnt be much.
I posted this on spearboard as well, just thought I'd throw it out to you guys too!

We found a private deserted island in Belize to rent for a week. We want to get there and build some primitive shelters and play survivorman on the deserted island. Of course, we will rent a boat and do a crapload of spearfishing. We'd hire a local captain for the first day or two until we learn where to go. We are going to video tape all of it, above and under the water, and make DVD's. Man vs. Wild. Build shelters, spearfish, hunt for conch, lobster and crab, eat only what we catch and some native fruits, scuba dive, play some primitive games, blowgun paintball wars, bon fires, bbq's, whatever. Sit around and tell spearfishing stories. Bring a hammock and just relax whenever...no schedule, no tourists, no worries.

Even though I will freedive for spearfishing, I am also a scuba instructor, and I would rent some gear and certify anyone who came and wanted to. Great diving down there. The reef comes right up to the island, and it drops off just a little ways out from shore to about 60ft.

The island is pretty big... like 20 acres. Dense mangrove forest. Small sandy areas on shoreline...not a large white sand beach. The same guy that we can rent the island from has a house in Belize City with A/C and showers if anyone wants to go spend some time on the mainland. He said he'd rent that out as well.

So all this, the house, the whole island, the boat, the scuba gear, the captain, the food, we are looking at around 2k each if we get enough people. Small price for the adventure of a lifetime!

Dates we are looking at are: February 5th - February 12th, 2010.

Anyone want in? If so, pm me and we can discuss details. I will update the thread with the number of solid commitments. Once we get a good size group, we'll collect deposits to hold spots.

I think its a great idea too! Yeah, $2,000 per person is what we think we can do this for.. if we get enough people to say they'd do it. Think you might like to get in? We'll probably limit spots to about 10 or 12. Let me know!

I like the idea.
I have always wanted to do something like that.
Perhaps a bit longer than a couple of weeks.
I would be ok with kayak only.
I am not that eager on scuba gear, provided food, paintball games, captain and the house.

Anyway, great stuff. Unfortunately I probably cannot make those dates, just wanted to support your idea. :)

Crazy, childish? What are You talking about?

This is the best idea I heard in years!

I am putting together another freediving expedition but mine starts in March, it takes place in Hawaii and last few months.
So I can't spend two grand now for a week of fun when I am struggling with my own budget.

For escape like Yours I would definately like to quit my job and leave for lot longer, I don't even take one week vacations anymore, they are just too short.

I will be posting soon about my project when I have more details worked out, but here's what I am gonna do for You.
I will emails Your post to my scuba buddies that travel a lot and are:
- done with resorts
- crazy about new places and hungry for adventure
- affected by the crisis enough to make fraction of they used to make but not enough to stop enjoying life..

Good luck! this is awesome

Cool idea.

Have a blast :)

Make sure you hide loads of rum in a secret bunker before you go like Jack Sparrow, oh and invite some fit women too.

So where does the refrigerated freighter holding the beer drop anchor? :friday

Octopus, sorry the dates dont work for you, but we may end up changing them anyways as it appears that it might be too short of notice. I'll keep you posted! Longer than a week? Sounds even better to me, just didnt know if people would be able to get away from work that long. Maybe we'll make it a ten day? Feedback is good!

Nostres, I appreciate the good feedback and for passing the word along to your buddies. I understand the budget situation, so no worries there. Your going to Hawaii for three months? Dang, Im jealous. I'd love to go, but dont think I could pull that off. What do you do for work?
I am thinking we should extend the length of this trip however, based on the feedback.

apneaboy and agbiv, good thoughts! We'll look into that.

Keep the feedback coming. I really want to make this work!

I know it sounds fancy but I am not rich, I am in costruction.
In order to make my project work I have to quit my job (it's slow anyway) and become freediving bum:)

I will work there part time so I'll still have time for diving and filming.
Can't wait to get there but putting everything together is actually fun too..

Hey man, whatever enables you to take fun trips and go spearfishing is cool. Freediving bum is a title to be respected!

those dates don't work for me. if the dates get moved i would think about talking time of and going. how much would a flight would be from calgary :)

Madprops, i will let you know when we get different dates. Airfare from Calgary is going to be a quite a bit, around 1,000 us. From most us cities, its around 600-700 I think. Thanks!

yea keep me posted on the price and the dates. even if this doesn't work maybe we could do it in a different place. where are you living ??

Sounds good. I live in Utah, so I'm looking at quite a bit for a flight too, but Belize will be worth it.

any news???

i would also be up for any other camping/spearing trips you have in mind??? up the bc coast maybe?? i know so sweet spots :)

No news really. Some people have expressed interest and want me to keep them posted, but nothing solid. I would be up for a different location as well, but dont want to give up on the Belize idea yet. I've never been up to BC area, hows the vis? temp? what do you shoot? shore diving?

greenling, lingcod, and all kinds of rock fish (crab as well:inlove). if you get a halibut it would be a new world record seeing as no one has speared one yet. all the fish i have speared there are tasty as hell. and i don't think you should ever give up on that idea just put it off.... if we hit up the coast it will be cheap as hell and we could still go hard core with no food and hike in and out. maybe even get dropped off and then hike out. now that would be cool. in any case we would need to take pics and vid and make a show and try and get on tv.... ok ill stop talking about my dreams :blackeye:blackeye

temp is not bad i would say have a 7 mm suit a 5 mm at the lest. i have a 6.5 and i can be in the water all day and still be great.

if we do the BC coast thing we could get some sweet gear cuz we don't have to pay for that flight. also we could get picked up at the road after the trip ( my whole family lives out there )............ i'm down in any case man:friday

Sounds fun! Dang, you have me excited for BC now. What time of year is best?? What airport is closest?

i'm thinking mid to late june. then streams running for the rockies will still be flowing nice so there would be tons of places to stock up on fresh water. no one really goes to up the coast, so a lot of it is untouched

it would be a sick trip man i already have a sweet backpack. i think i would get a good 5 mm suit that i could rough up a bit. man i'm getting goose bumps just thinking about it. travel as light as we can and go as far as we can. and think of all the tasty seafood mmmmmmmmm. now i will not be able to get to sleep.

i see this trip happening even if i have to trek it solo :)
