swimming hypoxic pyramids

Hi all

I´ve seen in many freediving training programs the hypoxic pyramid (or CFB controlled frequency breathing) swimming workout, consisting of crawl swimming and breathing every 5th stroke for a distance, lets say 100m, then 100m every 7th stroke,, then 100m every 9th stroke and back to every 7th and back to every 5th. Does anybody know what is the purpose of this workout?

I think it retains most of the CO2 in the blood, training the tolerance to high CO2 levels.
Over longer distances maybe also result in a lower O2 amount in the blood, provoking the body to into shifting over to the lactic acid forming?

Thanks for the question, for it makes me think on how to train my dynamics.
The idea that comes into my mind now is doing frc or empty lung 16 x 50m dives to train both CO2 and the lactic acid phase.

I would happy to learn of other people's views.
