hi everyone,
i was just thinking about how to make a target for a speargun... has anybody ever done this? is it even possible? im talking about a target that goes about a foot down in the water, not one on land. any feedback would be great. thanks a lot,

rofl are you spying on me? rofl
erm! Funilly enough we were doing something along just those lines a short while ago!
We used a foam swimming pool float (not polystyrene) with a weight tied to it so that it would sink, painted a cross on it and shot away.
If you read back through the forums I seem to remember someone saying they used some plastic mesh, that would work to I think, it wouldnt leave a hole but you could see how far out you where by where the shooting line went through :)

Speargun targets? I dunno... fish always worked for me. :thankyou

Find a scrap of the plastic netting used around the construction sites to warn off the passersby. Tie it to a piece of string and a rock, boom done and cheap. If you want to get faaaancy :girlie attach the netting to a wood frame and fire away.

The netting won't get all buggered up like a solid float, it's easy to paint or weave an outline of a fish on, it floats and the spear is easy to retrieve.

Next Q?

Well I just tie a baloon to a peice of string and then a rock. Throw it over board and shoot away. It is pretty simple other than you have to dive down to get the string/ballon peice after all is said and done. But hey that makes good practice anyway so its a no loose situation. Not to mention ya don't have a target to store and baloons are cheap. Just don't get the big baloons (too easy to hit) then it makes a lot of work of the cleanup later.

Aluminum cans.
On the bottom at first, then pick them up and drop them for motion shots.
Good for multiple shots.

For shot evaluation, use construction netting. For fun, use foam/cans/plastic bottles/etc. :)

Here's a few pictures I took in my pool of our target-shooting sessions a couple years ago:
