Hello,

I just joined this site. I have done just about every type of underwater hunting one can do in Texas, and looking to expand more into the bluewater aspect of it. Just wandering if anyone else in the central Texas area is into this?

I am from Austin. I am pretty new to the sport but I am always up for a dive. I could also use advise on local spots.

Thanks

Im from east texas, and also looking for people as well, I dont mind driving. There a pretty good texas gulf coast section at spearboard.com, the south texas freedivers are a big(i think) organization that spearfishes offshore If your looking for that. I'm hoping to hook up with them. I think a couple of people with them are from austin. You can get in touch with them at the site above.

Another new texas spearo here. I am from Killeen presently and moving to San Marcos within the month for school there. Please post if anyone wants to have a get together on the coast or otherwise. Oh yeah, South Texas Freedivers are pretty big and they have members everywhere.

there are a few of us on this site that have been getting together for some prety fun trips.... there's me, agbiv, slingshaft and spearstudtx just to name a few... we have a trip planed for next week in port Aransas! ill get you pics and an update as soon as we all get back. spearing is a great sport that i think you will all love and we texans are starting to get out own group going here on deeperblue

hey guys i live in Austin but from s.padre just wanted to let yall know that the good thing about port A is that the oil rigs arent that far out and and you dont need a big boat. This weekend will be perfect after Dolly. Good Luck

Second hunt for Deespearados TX! Al, Nate, Kerry & son are headed to Port A Sept. 6 & 7 on board Sloop NEMA. Got boat? PM me & we'll make plans. Anyone interested PM me.

I am from Texas as well...Although completely new. And unfortunately mostly into pole spear fishing. I am glad tto see others from this site that are Texans.

hey boys, im heading down to Port Aransas around the 8th... i have my same old boat (23 foot pathfinder with a 150hp) and im looking for some one to hit the water with. i make it about 10 miles out on a calm day. i also know of a barge wreck inside the port that has some fantastic rock grouper, mangrove snapper and sheepshead spearing. the only problem with it is its a honey hole for tarpon (that are to smart to bit hooks) and jewfish about 300+ pounds (cant shoot them). oh, and the sharks... there are alot of those too :crutch

so yah, im up for just about anything i just need some one else to join me... i should be down about a week tottal so get back to me!

I'm definately interested,
whats the vis like 10 miles offshore? And I how far do you have to go off of port aransas for suitable spearing?
And does anyone know of any rigs that are closer than 5 mi off port aransas?

there are rigs as close a 1-1 1/2 miles off the coast... the only problem is the blue water dose not always come in that close. it really depends on how the weather has been and to be honest i have no idea what its like right now... ill try to get on some charts and to call a few friends to find out. the viz is anywhere from 10-50 foot...
once again it all boils down to how the seas have been the the recent months. i have seen it as good as 40 foot viz on the beaches and as bad as... well lets just say the water was so bad you couldent see your hand infront of your face. if we can we will Deff dive the closer rigs so we have the gas to hope about 10 of them and make sure we only take good fish. the limits are also larger inshore at 5 red snapper a person! thats all rigs that are in the state waters and if all else fails we can use rod and reel

Thats awesome, I was just wondering because alot of places like galveston you have to go out for miles before you get out of the brown water, and into something that probably looks like the beaches in aransas.
But what do you normally catch off the rigs in aransas besides mangroves and sheepshead? And whats the bag limit on those?

well im not sure if i made my point 100% above lol. the beaches in aransas are normally green. with about 3 foot vizz... but if the weather is good, and ONLY about 3 weeks out of the summer the blue water will come in all the way to the beaches. and when that happens all the deep water wish follow, i saw an 60 lb sailfish caught on the beach last year. just about craped my pants, i spent the next two weeks in the water hunting but never saw one. on the rigs you can run into anything from cobia to cooda's. infact there are some rather large cooda the farther you go out (can be scarry if they are hungry). there is no bag limit on mangrove snapper in state waters and there is never any reason to bag out on sheepshead (tasty but too boney for me) when there are just as many snapper and rock/black grouper to choose from but i still like one or two a trip you will normally hit the blueish water (10+ vizz) about 2 miles out. but like i said earlier sharks have really become a problem. when i shoot a fish offshore i never use a stringer. i surface and hand it off to my little sister in the boat ha ha. she has also been know to outfish me on ocasion. she cought a 60lb ling last time we where out :vangry....

hope my inpit was a bit-o help

P.S. the attached doc is an arial view of the barge wreck i was talking about earlier. i found it online but i thought i would share anyways :friday

How far is the shipwreck off the shore? Because thats really nice clear water, much more clear than I thought.
But thats incredible about catching a sailfish on the shore, I would have nearly crapped my pants too, haha. And what kind of setup do you use on these trips (type of gun, length, and #of bands, polespear?).
And how many people are going on this trip?

the ship wreck is no more than 1,000 yards from where i dock my boat... thats why its such a fantasic hole. the people that do know about it and fish it are tourists that have no idea how to land large fish and the rest of the fisherman asume it has been fished out. so its just my little living reef. the water is rarly that clear. but it gets that way on ocasion.

i use all kinda of gear... i just got an Omar airbalete 110 that i am in love with! i would use this thing all the time if i could. but when i dive the ship i use a 90 JBL with 2 bands that i picked up for $40 at a garage sale. It has the power I need for the larger fish and it came with three thick shafts so im not afraid to bounce it off the hull or bend a shaft on a large fish. When I dive places with caves, I always use a pole spear with either a paralyzing tip or a trident tip. In this case I will also bring my “mares mini mini pneumatic” as it has fantastic power and it short enough to get in even the tightest of places.

Thats awesome! and do alot of tourists go there when you normally go?
And so can you name all the species you have seen there, I'm really curious to know.

And thats really really good, I was worried, you would have like a riffe or some other custom guns, but yeah I only have a 24" biller, that I'm actually modding into a 48 (all billers use the same trigger) and a pole spear, and even a hawaiian sling (I made it so the quality is definately pending), so I am looking forward to this alot!

just got back from the coast! the first day down in Port A the vizz was somewhere aroung 25-30 foot at the south jetties!! it was amazing but a storm hit the next day and busted it all the way back down to around 3 foot. it was a shitty spearing week after the storm, i only botherd diviing the last day when the vizz was at about 5 foot and i only did so with a light at the end of my gun at night so i could spot the flounder. i did ok, i shot one big one that broak the 2lb mark and two other smaller ones. the eating was great needles to say. while the water was bad i did a little rod and reel fishing and was able to land a few good sizzed sharks and some bull redfish,. the largest shark was 126.3lbs... a new personal record for blacktip! sorry im a little tippsy right now, if it dosent make sence im sorry. anyways, i head out to luisiana to train the new volunteers to clean up the oil spill in two weeks and i leave for the caymon islands in a few days for a family vaca before work starts up. anyone know the laws and rules for spearing there? i need to findout before i go doing somthing stupid ha ha. peaces, an have a nice night boys.
