Not bad indeed. Just a pity that instead of creating something authentic, they just ripped off the video of PFI "Defending the Vandenberg". It never feels good, especially if no credits to the original creators are given.

The orginal:

PS: crossposting in several subforums is also better to avoid - it avoids the redundancy, and the confusion with posting replies

"Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Devour old films, new films, music, books, paintings, photographs, poems, dreams, random conversations, architecture, bridges, street signs, trees, clouds, bodies of water, light and shadows. Select only things to steal from that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is nonexistent. And don’t bother concealing your thievery. celebrate it if you feel like it. In any case, always remember what Jean-Luc Godard said: “It’s not where you take things from – it’s where you take them to.”

This is the fifth rule of Jim Jarmusch, an independent film director.

That's correct. Insipration is common in art. However, if you just remake a work of another author without making it clear it is a remake, a parody, or a tribute to the original author, and as long you do do not bring much new, and do not give any credits to the orginal author, it simply does not feel good. It stinks plagiatory, and that is never good. It would be suffiecient giving Kirk Krack and the PFI team credit in the final titles (or even better in the opening title), and it would be pretty acceptable.

Trux that's all sorted, just the one thread now.

Trux has a couple of good points, and the movie to me seems like a lesser version of the PFI original.

However, the title of this threat is interesting: what would be the best freediving clip ever? A couple of images come to my mind, in random order

- the tracking shot on Umberto as he's going for 80 in Ocean Men
- Tanya and the whale
- the pan around Guillaume in Freefall
- Peter P in the canyon, looking up
- Stig walking upside down on the water surface
- William Trubridge as he turns and enters the arch
- Julie Gautier in Ashes and Snow
- Lotta's and Linda's simultaneous turn in the BMW commercial

What are your favorite moments?

Actually one of my favourites is out of water. Its of jaque Mayol walking along a beach with his fins in his hands. He looks like an old man still doing waht he is passionate about. I can't really explain it other than I hope I am still doing that as an old man and my love for the Ocean is as strong. In water I think Julies pan of Gulliame is the best and the parody of freefall the second best. Sometimes we take it all too seriously.

When I see a clip that's really good, that's totally balanced, it's like it was meant to be... a clip. But than I feel that diving is not the game, the game is making beautiful films of diving. And if diving is a performance art (as opposed to an art for that's being documented i.e. made into a documentary), then different rules apply. These films take me outside of the dive and become a representation of the dive, actually alienating me from the experience of diving - especially as they're unobtainable dives for an amateur.

In short, i want films that connect me with diving, not glossy fakes too good to be true. i don't know what they'll look like but I know how they'll feel.

But You have to admit here that "Defending the Vandenberg" also didn't give credits to it's original - Freefall. It was definitely inspired by it, at least one famous scene, the slo motion jump

Actually mine are out of water too, like in Big Blue when guys carry the dolphin, Enzo's speedos are priceless. Or when he decides (after getting the $$$) to repaint he's old car, or famous greeting in hotel "Jaque!" etc etc it all comes down to Enzo:)

The best freediving shot (in my mind) without question was a picture taken of Lee Donnelly (UK), entitled, 'Lee Donnelly: Deep Water Statics.'

It show Lee in blue water, neither the surface nor the bottom was visible; he had no fins on, just a speedo, feet down, knees bent, curled over his watch and looking at the dive time, suspended in space.

Umberto ascending from the cave in IMAX oceanmen seems excellent; unfortunately I've only seen the clip from the preview. That clip was not included in the more common Discovery Channel version of Oceanmen.

I just spent the last 30+ minutes going and watching all these videos (that I hadn't seen). Thanks all~

I have it on DVD - just remind me next time you're here and I'll make you a copy. That cave was Stargate on Andros, Bahamas. My favourite shot is from Oceanmen as well: a swim through in Honduras at 30 meters done completely as one tracking shot (with huge IMAX camera housings!). Brian de Palma would have been proud. They had to train the dolphins for days to meet him at the perfect moment as he exited the cave.

Eric, know where we can find that Lee Donnelly photo you mentioned? I had no luck.

Cheers,

DJ
