The movie was very well received in France back in the late 1980's, less so in the USA. Some like it, others tolerate it and still others change channels. Regardless of what may be some plot weaknesses the filming, sound track and shoot locations are excellent. It has grown to be a cult classic for free divers worldwide. this movie shaped my youth....
in a time when freediving was inexistent in my country, this was like a drop of water in the desert....
is hard to judge the artistic quality of this movie because i think that he overpass the strict boundaries of an artistic type....it is also documentary....
just for the fact that jaques mayol himself was councelor at this movie and just for the fact that jean reno was in the cast, is ennough to make le grand bleu a state of art....
