I've only heard of the term and dangers of Free Diving a couple weeks ago when I joined this forum, although I've been spearfishing since the 70s for a couple weeks every few years when I go on vacation to Algarve Portugal. Since I don't anticipate having a buddy with me while diving the question is: if I don't hold my breath for longer than 60 seconds I don't think I have to worry about blackouts, is this correct?

Every person is different, every day is different, and every dive is different. Can you guarantee that you will always be safe on a 60 second dive? No. Can you guarantee that you would always be able to restrict your dives to 60 seconds, even if distracted by a fish? No. No-one here should be recommending diving without a buddy.

The key question is safety...no diver, whether Apnea, SCUBA, military, commercial, scientific, etc dives without a buddy....that is an invitation to failure. While they may not be able to assit, the absence of a buddy makes it kind of hard to find out 
Having said that, people do swim and dive alone all the time...and hundreds of people drown each year and no one knows why they sucumbed...don't be a statistic...share your sport with someone else and then the 60 second limit you have arbitrarily landed on is obviated.

The most intense blackout I ever had happened when I had been down for only 10 seconds.
