Re: Guernsey summer fishing

max dive time : 1.45mins
no of dives : 54

Plaice 6lb 8oz

Well another fine day in Guernsey but this time with a definite autumnal twinge to the air. Autumn is here. Leaves are turning and the sea is still warm.

Had a short dive with Dave that turned out to be the usual couple of hours. We went in on the north coast and went with the aimn of getting a flatfish or two and maybe something else.

All pretty shallow to start with so I was happy looking at little shoaling mullet and the occasional mullet. Nice clear sandy beds with a bit of neptune grass and some clumps of tago giving out onto gravel and deeper water on the edge of a current.

The first proper dive I took landed me ontop of this plaice - weighed in later at 6 and a half pounds.

I must admit that it was uncovered and I am definitely a novice at prodding for plaice. Dave had better luck and prodded about three plaice in the end.

We carried on working away with short 30 / 40 sec dives and 30 / 45 second recovery following a grid like pattern on the edge of the tide. Well that was the plan but I went free style just wandering all over the place and ending up at a reef heading parrallel to the shore.

A few aspettos along the edge of the sand/kelp and alot of large pollack began to shoal me.
As I worked away dropping down more and more pollack came along for the ride. Then the mullet in between and finally after about 1:10 down the bass came in.

I shot the larger one first (five pounds) - not a great shot but the wave of little ones spooked and fled so I was about to come up when a head points towards me and this larger one cruises in, turns and gets put on the stringer. The littler one was on another aspetto in about 8m of water - really nice spot on the edge of the current and not an area I had explored before.... think I might go back :)

Anyway on the swim back I saw several chancre crabs buried in little holes and also a beautiful cuttlefish. I spotted it at the end of a dive and so made sure I had a very good breathe up for a bit of observation. I got very close and watched it for a while, it started to pulsate and ripple with colours before a vertical take off and a shooting away like a spaceship - man they are very very cool !

Just another dive over here... Ed :)

big fish

Grouper 40Kg

To be objective, I might think twice before shooting one again of this size (if i ever see one again) . On a more positive note, it went to good cause, we did eat the fish, it was good, it fed 15 people.

Cheers everyone.

Re: Guernsey summer fishing

Red Mullet 2lb 8oz

water temp : 13C
max depth : 11m
max dive time : 1.17mins
no of dives : 34
visibility : 8m
swell : none
----------------------------

Had a dive this afternoon for a few hours, the swell was right down and the wind had dropped too meaning pretty calm conditions. I thought I'd try the west coast for a change as I can't remember the last time I dove there.

The reef where I like to go sometimes on a spring tide was pretty good. I had a good long part of the session in the shallows stalking fish in about 2m to 4m. Really clear in the shallows at about 4m visibility. I saw a nice bass in the current but not a hope in hell of getting it ! It was a good 6m away from me and also in a raging river of a current that I was trying to swim across. I gave up in the end - always forget how strong the rips are...

Anyway I got swept round by the current and angled towards some rocks so I could get out and walk to another spot. Alot deeper and alot calmer and alot clearer. I was amazed to see that the visibility made it look like the depth was 6m but in fact it was about 10m or 11m...

I shot a four pound bass on aspetto and it did the classic 'what's that ? Oh I better make a turn when I get close...' manouver - so shot just on the edge of the gill plate :)

I was seeing alot of smallish pollack too and as I was chilling out on the bottom admiring the numbers (shed loads of pollack all about a pound maybe) a red mullet swam through the shoal. I lined up shot it and then headed for the surface... duh... the spear got tangled in some kelp and I saw the fish tear off and swim away. I hate it when that happens. Poor fish, lucky crabs.

Anyway after working my way along the reef I found another good spot in about 10m or so and dropped onto the sand edge. Again all the pollack mobbed me and they were so cool to watch. And another red mullet made it's way towards me - I went for a solid body shot this time - two and a half pounds :)

Called it a day and swam the mile or so home - felt like ti was taking me ages ... now I know why I have been avoiding the west coast.

Ed

Bass (European) 11lb & 10lb

Here you go then :friday

10lb and 11-lb Bass today - both at 30ft in caves..... happy me.
Viz was 40ft, and sparkling, water temp was 9deg. I was using my Beauchat 75 with 6.5mm twin barb seateck spear. 5mm suit. I was diving with my father (who was national champion in the late 60's early 70's, and represented GB several times). I also had a 3lb Mullet, loads off mullet in the shallows. I saw a big shoal of Bass serveral times, always on the egde of that amazing viz though. Difficult to tell their size at that range though, but probably none bigger than 5lb. Lots of small Pollock about. Eventually I saw a huge Bass dissapear in a rock and followed it down, about 40ft I guess, in the back end of the tide, so it was still running a bit. As I got to the rock I saw 5 or 6 massive bass. I was slow and deliberate in my movments and never spooked them but they always stayed just out of reach (my 120 Beauchat would have been good!). After the 4th dive to 40ft I settled on top of the rock I thought they were under and looked over the edge. My first Bass looked out from under the rock and I was right over it. Not being sure I was in range (that viz was soooo good) I dropped over the edge of the rock onto it. The Bass sensed I was there and twitched, but to late..... I nailed it in the head dead. I laid on the surface strung the fish and rebreathed and went down again. This time I went right to the bottom and into the cave. I could see an even bigger Bass, but could only see the white of it's belly as it was right up in the roof. I laid my shoulder down on the gravel and waited as long as my breath would hold me there. As I lay there the Bass dropped out of the cave and came 100% into full sight. With the sunlight shining in from the other end of the cave it looked a magnificent fish. I didn't move! I just let it gently drift about in the hole till at last it was right in front of my spear, 6ft away. Wack! It was dinner! As I suface (lungs burning a bit by now) I saw my Dad laying on the surface watching me.... I think I had a good teacher! One day I'd like to pass these skills onto my two sons as well.

Off again tomorrow!!!!!

Where was I??? - Somewhere between Brittany, Dover and Lands Ends :t

Re: Guernsey 2006

Plaice 5lb 3oz

Quote Magpie "15 mins later Foxfish called me over and I saw him wrestling with a massive plaice! Big old slab that went 5lbs 3oz! "

Thanks for posting Tom...we had a great dive & a great catch.
My big plaice was lying in pretty shallow water over the gravelly bottom & only partly buried, to be honest I did not hit him very well as my spear was very close to the edge of his mouth! As Tom said I had to wrestle the beast because he was pretty lively.
So we continued our swim out towards the tide & at the very edge I spotted the other plaice, completely buried this time, I took more time & nailed him fair & square between the eyes.
Maybe, for me the highlight of the dive was Toms first sole & a good one at that but missing a really big bass was pretty memorable too!

Today I decided to check out the same spot, I have just got home & I am still excited about the dive.
I was really hoping for a bream, I swam straight out to the edge of the tide without wasting energy diving on the tempting flat sand. Quite deep for me out there but I was getting down OK, on about my fourth dive during decent I spotted a half buried fish. Swimming closer I realised it was rather large in fact probably the largest flat fish I have seen while diving in Guernsey. The partly covered Blonde Ray became increasingly more detailed as I approached. Amazing creature & positively huge!
I swam up for much needed air, my main thought was how the hell am I going to swim back to shore with that bloody thing. It was a struggle to swim back up tide but I managed & dived back down to review the situation. The ray didn't seem to notice my presence so I gave it a prod SH......T it lifted out the gravel & it was only then I truly realised just how big this critter was. Bursting for the surface I looked down as the ray shot off at a rate of knots. WOW that was fun. :t

Wrasse (Ballan) 7lb 14oz

Haven't had much time to go daytime spearing lately. Usually I'm in every day or at least every other day but afraid this year I have just too much on. Anyhow have managed a few boat dives and a few night dives but today managed a quick dip over the low tide during the daytime.

Only 2 notable points to the dive. I got a big wrasse, as in really big, like 7lb 14oz. Don't spear too many wrasse although I like to take a few big uns as they do make good eating.

Second highlight of the dive was watching about a dozen big bream stream by me. Amazing sight and they were an easy shot but to be honest I was so suprised to see them that I didn't get off a shot. Not too bothered about not catching one as I'm sure that I will eventually, but for now I can see them in my minds eye. They were pretty big, over 3lb I reckon.

Not much of a detailed report but not enough hours in the day for all the things I need to do.

Happy hunting to all.

Dave

Wrasse (Ballan) 7lb 15oz

I also just tried again at Amarreurs, hoping for another big bass, but only saw a couple of small ones in the distance swimming in open water - big tide I suppose. Viz was better than recently though still not as good as you had because of a bit of swell. Saw another big rockie hiding in a hole which I thought I might as well shoot. more for the freezer! (nearly 8lb I think - ran out of weights with our kitchen scales!

Re: 85 cm gun advice needed

Leerfish 29.5kg

Did I tell you I just got back from my first Med Sea trip? I got some bass and dentex and they were all killed with my 106cm handmade wooden gun... A near 30kg leerfish too

Just a couple of pictures of the catch and the gun. The story is not that spectacular anyway.

There were six fish (20-30kg) swimming at around -10m. I was doing an aspetto at -15. Pushed myself from the bottom when I saw them and shot the biggest one in a long shot. The fight was only about 5 minutes. That’s about it. I was very lucky! :)

Re: Ireland spearing 2007

Crawfish 3lb 1oz

Hi everyone,
Yesterday I went back to look for second wreck again. This time I went in the morning, just before high tide and it was a good deal deeper.I made a full circuit of the rocks but could still only find smaller bits of wreckage.I'll have to try low tide and further out sometime.

Meanwhile, as I was now getting bored, I moved off to look for good pollack elsewhere. The spot I chose has a row of "fang like" rocks sticking out of the water in front of steep cliffs.I anchored on a 30ft shelf at the base of the fangs as the water is too deep to anchor anywhere else.I swam the length of the rocks then began diving the wall and shelf while drifting back in the gentle current. I soon had a pollack of 4.9lbs then half way back I found a 3.1lb crayfish on the wall about 10 ft below the shelf! First one I've ever seen.

On the way back I got out my small spinning rod to try for mackeral. At first I caught only pollack keeping one of 4.4lbs and returning the others, but eventually spotted birds diving and took 10 mackeral to make pate.A nice mixed bag.

Re: Guernsey 2007

Plaice 6lb 14oz + Tub Gunard 2lb

I haven’t posted much about recent catches and expeditions lately. This is in part due to the crap weather this summer and a distinct lack of fish.

Have done a couple of night dives and at least I have caught a few flats and reds. The last dive I managed a couple of small plaice and a small sole but it was meagre pickings for a lot of work. Did see a beautiful little turbot though but left him to grow a bit.

This weekend with the big tides (and holidays end) I was determined to make a big effort. Saturday saw me way out in the tide down west. With 25 foot vis and 25 foot depth I was desperately working the tide edge but was fighting a loosing battle against the current. Just coming up at the end of a search I spotted a big tail sticking out from under a piece of weed. As I rose I could just make out the 3 little spheres that could be 2 eyes and a mouth of a big plaice the other side of the weed to the tail. There wasn’t much to see, just a few lines in the sand and what could easily have been a few small stones but after catching a few thousand plaice I was confident in my judgement. I kicked hard on the surface to maintain position over the just discernable all important piece of weed way down on the bottom. My calf and thigh’s were heating up as I strove to stem the current by pumping the big ice fins. Adrenaline was eating the oxygen in my lungs and my chest heaved. After what seemed like an hour but was 5 minutes I was calmer and 10 foot up tide of the weed on the bottom. I dived. As I closed in I knew the thrill of being right as the tail looked more and more fishy. I moved the weed with the spear tip to reveal a HUGE plaice uncovered on the sand. Moving my grip from the handle to the rubbers on the Omer XXV, I used the loaded gun as a hand spear, driving it through the fish. Fumbling in the sand with my left hand I reached under and seized the spearhead before dragging the fish upward. On the surface I finned across tide and into the lee to string my prize. It was a huge fish which I was certain was over 7lb. However back ashore it was seen to be a bit lean and only made it into the top sixes. Big fish though. In top condition I think it would have been nearly 8lb.

Managed one more plaice that day and also a first for me. My first ever tub gurnard. Seen them while on scuba and caught them on rod and trot but never had one spearfishing before. Seen some small ones at night but this one went 2lb and became a PB as well as my supper.

Bit of an epic novel this report but well you did ask what the old man had been up to.

Happy huntin’ to all.

Dave

PS the plaice with the gun is a "smaller" 4lb-er and the other's a pic of the big one

Re: Guernsey 2007

Brill 1lb 8oz

It’s been a busy last week or two. After such a rubbish year for vis and fish the last couple of weeks of this Indian summer have seen a rejuvenated OMD. Been in freedive spearing for 8 out of the last 11 days. That’s 3 night dives and 5 day dives either after work or at weekends. The weather and tides have been good so not sure what went wrong with those 3 missed days – must be getting old.

Don’t claim to have broken any records for quantity or size of fish but even so compared to the rest of the year the final score doesn’t look too bad: 9 bass, 9 plaice, 3 soles, 1 pollack and a brill. Best fish was my 7lb bass which was my biggest this year and the best plaice went 4lb. My 7lb plaice was caught 2 weeks ago so is not counted in this list.

Saturday I was out in the bays to see if the plaice had arrived. Offshore there were a few last week and I was wondering if the bays would produce. Vis was good and fish were in. Trouble was they were all small. Found 14 plaice plus my first free dived brill of the year. I think 2 plaice were undersized and the other 12 from minimum legal up to a pound or so. The brill was about 1.5 lb. Every one of the plaice were well buried and I dived down and measured each one to check legal size. Speared the 5 biggest leaving the other legal but smaller ones to grow. The brill was lying uncovered on gravel as usual but was still probably the hardest to see of all the fish.

I was pleased with my haul because even if the average size was small those are most definitely the best eating fish.

Dave

Re: Cornwall 2007!

Pollack 12.76lb

These last few weeks have (almost) made up for the crappy summer. I have taken my biggest ever pollack at 12.76lbs and 2 bass over 9lbs.

Yesterday I bunked off work and went spearing in the afternoon at a new spot. Well worth the effort. I saw a pod of about 20 dolphins before I got in the water, and found a wreck with LOTS of small black bream on it (now i just need to find where their parents and grandparents are hiding:)) I also got a 9.4lb bass, and a 4.1lb Gilthead bream.

The bream was in a big school, which just came straight in on me in crappy viz. At first I thought they were bass, then I realised it was more giltheads than I had ever seen before, all about the same size, one of the other reasons I almost ended up with nothing was that I was looking for a big one at the back of the shoal. It was such an amazing sight I almost forgot to pull the trigger!

A very dodgy photo of the pollack! I used to check stomach contents all the time, but these days I normally just fillet fish without gutting them.

cheers

Tub Gurnard 4lb 5oz

I went in the lagoon over low tide today, good vis apart from the shallows. I was hoping for a bass but for some reason the forest has disappeared! I cant understand where all the japweed has gone?
So I went into the desert to look for flats, no flats but a nice Tub Gurnard.
I was just poking around the bottom in about 15' of water but there wasn't much happening so I decided to swim out toward the tide in Port Grat. I spotted the Gurnard from the suface & it didn't move until I was on top of it, weighed 4lb 5oz

Red Mullet 2lb 8oz

Should have been a good weeks diving this past week but wasn''t for me. Been a bit under the weather so to speak. Actually so as not to speak as I've lost my voice on top of feeling pretty shitty.

Anyhow was getting frustrated with just looking out on good tides and weather so went in tonight. Only went for an hour and a bit and didn't go too deep but I actually feel a bit better now so my wife was wrong about "killing myself".

Vis is okay and the sunset tonight over a mirror calm sea was magnificent. Saw a few fish including a common (freshwater) eel. Ended up with a nice sole, a big red mullet and a small (tasty) plaice. Weighed the red at 2.5lb and the sole at 2.75lb.

Can't go tomorrow but Saturday looks good.

Dave
