It can take a long time to get an up-to-date response or contact with relevant users.
Not sure how accurate this entry is - from Wikipedia:

"In 2012 he has suffered serious brain damage during a no-limits record attempt, and has not made an appearance in months. Apparently he is making progress."

(Tried to post the link to Wikipedia but the submit does not want to complete when the link is added to the post. Just do a google on Herbert Nitsch to find the link)

For what I can see on Wikipedia, the paragraph is submitted on 2nd November, the user who submitted it has not provided any source and is only identified as IP-no. 41.135.31.76, which is listed as Randburg near Johannesburg in South Africa.
There's nothing similar on the German version of the page, so it could be a competely unsubstantiated rumour (and thereby lame to write on WP), but unfortunately it may also be someone with insider's knowledge.

Well spotted on the SA IP address, as I said, not sure how accurate it is.

The thing that worries me a bit about about the Wikipedia entry is serious brain damage, to me, means someone that would be in a vegetative state. I did however see an image of him, (BLACKOUT THROUGH NARKOSIS | Herbert Nitsch Blog) supposedly taken recently, sitting with a woman and smiling. Also the blog entry states "Herbert is putting together details of his record dive".

It definitely does not depict someone with serious brain damage.
