Agree with Ivan and Jason.
Comparing numbers of packs is no good, due to the diffrent techniques. I do few big packs, ie compared to the video Herman attached, where the diver does many many mini packs. Didn't think of that when I wrote my last post...

Yeah too true I think myself I do medium sized packs kinda like the golfball explanation. I have watched others pack on videos and everyone seems to do it really quickly compared to me. If I packed at the speed some of the others do I would get dizzy and pass out

Hello,
Although I'm new to freediving, I've snorkeled alot, and "packing" with the cheeks is something I've always done, although I didn't call it that at the time! Now however thanks to Eric Fattah's article http://www.ericfattah.com/frenzel.doc , I'm able to pack through my snorkel, although as some have pointed out already, not quite as efficently. I'm not sure it would be possible to pack as efficently through a snorkel though due to the reduced volume of air possible to compress with your tounge vs. your entire mouth. Any thoughts? If it is possible to be as efficent through a snorkel, I want to know!

I think that if you can hold the snorkel between your lips (as opposed to your teeth) you can come fairly close. The difference per pack seems to be the little void that bounded by your tongue (when it is sealing against your upper palate), your lips and the bottom of your mouth. I'm going to guess that the average person can pack at about 60% efficiency when using a snorkel vs packing w/ their face out of the water (but all faces are different so ymmv).

I know that I can pack fast enough using the "tongue and palate" technique to get a major head-rush, so it seems pretty effective.

That makes alot of sense to me and I'm going to try it today in the pool. I imagine as with anything practice makes perfect! But the snorkel between the lips sounds like it's going to work!
