I've just got myself a nice shiny new gun and need to try it out, so I'm looking for somewhere to dive where I might be able to see the end of it! It's all too rough round my way at the moment so was thinking of trying out a dive in the Fleet or the Harbour as they look really sheltered. Any advice? Any dangers to look out for? Anybody want to come?!

Don't think you can dive the fleet as it is a bass nursery, somebody may well correct me here but that was the case back in the day. Not sure what the harbour master has to say about diving the harbour but again wiser heads will advise here. :)

It is a bass nursery so its appealling to your good nature. It does not stop you taking any other species though......
The Fleet is a designated bass nursery area (SI 1156 1990) and fishing from boats is prohibited at all times. This prohibition does not apply to the shore and there is one fisherman using a tidal net for bass in this area, which is not abiding by the spirit of the designation.

So is the harbour itself a good place to dive? If so, where's the best place to get in the water? It's Father's day next Sunday so I've got a day full of diving at the place of my choice!

if you have the family with you I would opt for sandsford castle, sheltered and ideal for kids. Spearing isn't bad either;-)

Thanks, I'll give it a go if the vis looks any good. Is it sheltered from these flippin SW winds?

Hi if you go down sandsfoot follow the moored boats towards Lulworth direction for a good distance, there's a good bit of rough ground there in about 9-10 metres. I have seen some nice flatties there and good size thornbacks.
