Thoughts?

His website: http://www.breathholds.com where he claims to have a pb of 10:27

Apologies if this has been posted before - can't find it using the search though, so I'm assuming not...

I guess you could fake something like this easily enough by reverse packing a bit during the breathhold then packing again to avoid your chest moving - the YouTube one does look quite authentic though. Haven't bothered to chew up my bandwidth downloading the other videos on his site, they're rather large.

All such stuff on the internet looks inherently dodgy and probably is, but I actually have no problem believing a person could do 10:00 statics just by practicing at home in bed a couple of times a week. Just quite unlikely is all.

Whoops, just noticed something - the video's been spliced at 7:12. Turn the volume right up and look at his stomach make an unusually sharp jump :). And again at 7:30. Looks like he took a breath and edited it out later. There is a discrepancy of about 6 seconds between the video time counter and his stopwatch, which would be long enough for a few breaths. See if you can find any other points at which it has been edited, I've sat through enough of watching this young fella's stomach!

It also looks like he may take "micro-breaths" from a few minutes onward. Just taking very small amounts of air in through the nose can extend a breathhold greatly. His stomach moves very slightly and rhythmically throughout which leads me to this conclusion. He may think he's having small contractions and not even realize that he's breathing.

Doing it underwater would add credibility.

Peace, Glen

My first thought upon seeing that video was. Is there a breath holding fetish around I'm blissfully unaware of? Maybe I just got a dirty imagination or something...

Anyway, I think it's pointless to even discuss wheather or not he "cheats" or not. All I see is some guys abdomen for 8 minutes. I don't see anyone holding their breath...From the video it seems though that he does have pretty good size lungs and flexible chest, so I don't find it totally not credible. But as stated by someone in the link, that 5+ video preparation is pretty much a textbook example of huge hyperventilation.

But if he is indeed for real, then 2 things:
-I really hope to see him compete, he would be awesome!
-He could probably add another minute if he stayed still for a second. The phone will stay there, no need to look at it every 30 seconds.

In fact if I had to point out one suspicious looking element from that, I would say it's all the nervous movement and waving the phone around - not something I would normally associate with lot's of breath holding experience. But then again, what do I know...

I certainly do not find the idea of someone completely unknown to the "scene" doing 8+ minutes dry breath holds impossible. But an anonymous belly in youtube is not the most convincing proof of that...

rofl rofl rofl
I do wonder about some of the breath holding stuff on youtube.

Yeah, it doesn't seem totally unbelievable. I just got back from the PFI course in Monterey, Calif. Kirk was mentioning that the current static record holder, who's name escapes me, has broken ten minutes clean in training. Heck, even I got to 4:50 clean during our last static session. Not really relevant, but I'm telling everybody that will hold still. http://forums.deeperblue.net/images/smilies/icon7.gif If it's real, I'd love to see what he could do wet, with some better technique.

It was Tom Sietas from Germany and the one I know of was 10:08, and it was in the water. That was a few months ago now, who knows - he may have done more by now.

Cheers,
Ben
