Hi,

This is my first post. I always felt like reading and not writing (due to being less experienced). Have been spearfishing for a while now and am training apnea. Caught some nice fish lately but I dive in shallow waters (say 5m). I prefer spearfishing at night, its easier to catch the fish :p . I own a small speargun a mares explorer 50 with a modified band. (very hard to reload).

Anyways was wondering to move to deeper blue waters in the mediterranean since I own a rib.

What are the longest range spearguns you have ever come across? Modified or stock doesnt matter?? I think its best to go for the longest range speargun right when going in deeper water ???

Thanks and keep up all the lovely posts.

Atheuma,
What size fish do you get in your area? There are bluewater guns out there that take 5 bands and will shoot past 10 meters:

They work well for real big fish, but good luck touching a small fish from ten meters away.
As with everything there is a tradeoff:
Guns with a long range are built very heavy to absorb recoil; they shoot far but the tradeoff is that they are very hard to swim with and to swing. So having a long range is not a panacea.

..and moreover: a fish is not a fixed target. Yes you might use a gun with a six or seven meters range, but by the time the spear gets there, the fish will be already gone, most of the times. Learn to get closer to the fish: that's the key.
If you spear in the Mediterranean, my honest advise is do not use anything bigger than a good 110/120 centimeters european style bandgun.

Try a Rob Allen 110 cm, double wrapped....that should be plenty.

You should try Euro 120 from Riffe....7.3 meters of effective range ! huge and real
