JBL Spearguns

Is a 250 $ gun that shoots like a riffe just TOO good to be true ?

Can't find any reviews on the damnned thing so was wondering whether someone around here has heard any news.

Thanks

-- James

Hate to be harsh JBL's are known for being terrible guns.
The trigger mech is unreliable, and they are overall cheap guns. For the same amount of money you could get a dependable euro/south african style gun that will suit you much better. (In Key west)

Yea thats another thing.

I have a 63" jbl right now and its working well for me but about a week ago a friend of mine lent me his 52" riffe and the amount of ease added onto my spearing was unbelievable.

Any brands in mind ?

Rob Allen!!!!!!!!! Great quality, great price - atleast over your way they are and they are pretty much bomb proof!!!. I have 2 and couldn't see myself using anything else.

haha, actually my brother just got the 1200 tuna railgun from rob allen.

I'm pretty set on the new pure intsinct series from mares though.

The instinct pro deffinately has my name written all over it

:p

I have heard that they had accuracy problems,I think it was from a hawaiian skindiver test.
But they said that with modifications it shot great.

The handle looks like one of those old pistols that pirates used, they look pretty cool!

Yea they deffinately look pretty serious.

do you by any chance have a link to the forum ?

I've been looking for about an hour and still no luck finding it :[

HSD did find accuracy problems with the early Instinct. I cannot quite recall what the mods were - I think they changed out the shaft or bent down the flopper or something. After the mods they were fine. I agree the grip is very appealing. Worth a look also are the Omer Cayman's - really nice grip on those guns and they shoot very nicely. Stunning trigger mech on those.

Here's (below) a scan of the HSD review: to make it shoot better, the HSD guys put on it a full lenght rail, hawaian shaft and 2x9/16" circular bands.
As you see it's an american type of set, and maybe that partly explaines why the american testers felt more comfortable with that set up, while a european would still prefer the standard set up.
Nontheless, the Instinct is a cheap gun, of a very beautiful design but poor in the quality of materials, and not the most durable.
Plastic parts such as the line release and the stock rails tend to get broken quite easy. The junction between handle and barrell is not exaclty state of the art. Beautiful gun, and enough reliable for hunting small reef fish. But you get what you pay for. A Cressi Comanche or a Cayman would be so much much much better than the Instinct in the unexpensive category.
Now the HSD review:

A couple of my buddies and I were using the older Sporasub Instinct Pro's for shore diving in Northern California, and we were very hard on our gear with the rough water and rocky entries. That being said, we broke the little clips off of every muzzle, the safeties broke off two guns, and the line release broke on one. None of us use those guns anymore, (I lost mine...Jim sold both of his.) Jim's now shooting a midhandle Wong hybrid, (nice but expensive), and I'm using a little Rob Allen 70cm gun most of the time. The RA is a rugged little no frills gun. Meaning no loading pad or elegant little plastic gadgets to break off. The handle is kinda blocky, the trigger thick and stubby, and the housing thick and strong around the barrel. It's rigged with a RA 7mm shaft and single 3/4" band, so it's plenty powerful for what I do. It gets beat up pretty good both on the kayak and in the water, but never fails to perform. RA's arent the prettiest or sexiest guns out there, but they're rugged fish killers that are priced right and parts are easily obtainable.

Yep, Rob Allen guns are the BOMB DICKETY!!!!! My 1m Caranx is copping a bit of a bashing but she's still in great shape as far as functionality goes.
