I just post a story in the Spearo Board about how I missed the chance to kill a possible world record pargo, and it gave me the idea to start a new thread about those proverbial big catches that went away. I hope others will add their stories, but anyhow here is mine: I saw some giant big pargos by the north shore of an island north of Venezuela, but I never took a shoot at them because I didn't have a powerful enough speargun at the time, visibility was poor and the pargos were moving very fast, never giving me more than one or two seconds to aim. With the gun I had, I needed a very good shot, and never got the chance. On top of that there were big waves, close to a big wall of rocks and I couldn't count on the boat to come closer to help me pull out the fish. That day I learned why they are called "snappers": every time those pargos snapped their tails the sound was like a rifle shot: BANG! My estimation is that those pargos would have weighed well over 100 punds (50 kilos). I went back a couple times but the water was always murky. However, (hope springs eternal) I still dream of going back and get one of those, some day. Jose.
PS. If you want to see a big pargo that didn't go away, check the video by Philipe Virgili in the spearo board (world record), or the picture of the same animal in the PicassoAmerica web site: http://picassoamerica.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1116&sid=4f6d83b8a9a16202c5f3335a8d7cdf17
