One of those stranger than fiction coincidences,

On the same day Apple announces that the new MAC will have an Intel processor, the stock closes at $80.86

Aloha

what was it before?

Hehehe - that wasn't the irony :D

One of the early Intel chips used in PC's was called the 8086 and hence the irony that the Apple stock closes at $80.86 the day it announces using the Intel chips.

Not sure that's irony - technically speaking :)
Intel is also getting away from their space heater technology this year - reverting to a variation on the Pentium M core. Their current processors are inefficient pieces of crap.

Well, it changes from year to year... My 2.4GHz HT is cold as ice (4° C above ambient with no load) as opose to my brother's AMD 2500+ (can't remember the core name) with 52°C (no load). It was that stupid version without heatspreader, and one had to spend some time to fit the heatsink properly.

Righto - that's a northwood - and an older 2400. Back then I liked Intel best - but then they went the 'more power' route (prescott) instead of more efficiency. AMD currently dominates both speed and efficiency pretty much across the board. The exception being the Pentium M which is a dynamite laptop processor. As you say though - it will change of course.

Yey AMD. :)
My athlon 2000 is pretty hot (something like double ambient temprature:D), but it never overheated so I don't mind.
The new generations is much cooler, I got my brother athlon64 3000 and last time I checked it was running at 32c when the air temp was 30c. It was equipped by a caring brother with arctic silver 5 though. :)

My current CPU is an Athlon64 Venice 3200 and it also has a blinkin' HUGE Artic Cooler on it... I had to turn off the CPU fan detetection in BIOS because the fan runs so slowly that the BIOS gives a failure alert (less than 600 RPM to maintain a temp of about 34 deg C).....

But it sure is quiet! :inlove

The Da@$ cooler is so big I had to get a new set of cables for the Hard Drives, etc., to route around the thing so I could get the box closed.... :vangry

No, the CPU that I have is the Venice

That's why I opted for the AS-5, it saves you a few centigrades without changing the heatsink/fan, but it requires some pedanticity to apply correctly.
Although it is a little too late, you can DIY slim IDE cables, just use a paper knife to seperate all the little wires. Ofcoruse there is room for mistakes...

Anyway, as long as the cpu runs well bellow terminal temprature at max load I don't think temprature matters that much.

Well...My cursor's having trouble loading.

Does anybody know how do defrag a Commodore 64?
