and it brought me back... my last post was Feb 06 I guess and I have to admit, I don't recognize many here and you likely not I but... After Alison and Colin departed us I left the sandbox of the Middle East for the US and things slowed down just a tad with the diving.

We settled in New England and no spearing now for a few years-although I am still maintaining gear and guns!

Maggie complains we have no fresh fish 3 x a week anymore and the temp was -16 C this morning-go figure. Positive note is we go ice fishing now-negative is we have to bore through 2+ feet of ice to get to the fish!!!

Island Sands, sorry it took so long on that confirmation! LOL haven't logged in for a bit:wave Looks like you are still where you were when I left-sent someone your way a year or so ago but can't remember the name. I take it you like it there since you did not go back to where you were before LOL. To the rest, hi gang and sorry its been so long.

Some of you from before I now see on TV here in the US which I have to say is a RIOT!!!! I am not sure if your all still active on the board or not, but... its a riot seeing up on the Outdoor Channel spearing like there's no tomorrow!!

I thought of you all last fall when, as I was attempting to recover a deer from an ice filled creek and others were moaning it was too deep, I threatened to pull out my speedo, go for a swim, and get me deer! (I suddenly had offers of assistance...)

This board has provided a lot of companionship and friendly chatter for the years time we spent in the sand and we do miss it and the life on the water.

I managed to bring myself tears today once again... speaking with someone about our lives overseas as expats (our priest interestingly enough) talk went to Sri Lanka, then to Bentota and the wonderful diving on the wrecks off the coast.

Then of course it went to the Tsunami and how we left a few days early but friends who were down the coast a few miles were staying... which of course led to Alison and Colin, their survival in the horrors of nature, Colins saving of Alison, the fisherman stumbling across them, followed by their air evacuation back to the UK and then their recovery-the calls of concern to them and their family in the UK from our home in the Middle East and all the folks here from the 4 corners of the earth represented on this board.

The happiness as they recovered, the talk on the board of dives in different places, and then not a year later the shock as they both left us so suddenly in a horrific accident.

It is strange how friends so distant but with simple shared loves can affect one so deeply in their departure. Only 1 other situation in my life ever affected me the way that Alison and Colin have, and that was the loss of comrades in fallen in battle so many years ago.

Sorry my first post in a few years is on such a note but had to let it out and the only folks that would understand are here. Hopefully in a few month, as Spring hits, I can get back UNDER the water again instead of on it and post here about New England diving... (gotta check on spearing-don't think its allowed here :vangry )

Welcome back mate, dont know you but that makes no difference everyone here is a friend in the water in some form or another, and the pirks of these forums is that no matter where you are in the world (even stranded on 2 ft of ice) there is someone to talk and listen, so again welcome back and look forward to hearing of your next adventure under the water.

Welcome back, Anton. I still feel the loss of Colin and Alison. Theirs is an incredible story, and it is good to honor their memory by remembering them.

Alison was one of the first people to welcome me here on DB and I remember hearing the tragic news about her and Colin's untimely passing. I am glad to be reminded of them and even though they are not with us physically anymore let us celebrate their spirit and I hope they are observing and interacting with us from their resting place. God bless them.

God bless them, and thanks Anton for your heart touching thoughts.

its wierd
i was reading the what you do for a living and alisons post was on and this post today
never far from your thoughts never far away from you .
so i hope friends of alison and colin can take comfort from this.
i personaly did not have the fortune to meet either of them may they rest in peace

Welcome back Anton. I hear that lobster diving in Maine can be pretty productive, just stinking cold.

I was reading the same thread as Jay and thinking of Alison yesterday. Miss that lady.

Its supposed to be between 0 and -20 tonight/tomorrow so I will be getting my lobster at the local supermarket for the near future LOL

jay-I agree, it is strange... I knew Alison from just before she gave up the airline gig I think...but still it is weird. I think of her and then Colin every few months even though I have not been diving (after doing 150-200 dives a year ((scuba)) plus some free diving) or been here on the board for several years now. I guess that some folks just have that effect on people.

I think I had a mental block or something with the board... as we left the Middle East we stayed in contact with Island Sands via email for a short while then... I guess I dropped out of contact. It did NOT however stop me from thinking of them every few months...

hi Anton
A friend pointed me to this post, I didnt see it until now.

Its great to have you back and know that you are still lurking around in the background! i remember you calling me up on the phone on the day of the Tsunami, as I was in the Maldives and we were also affected, albeit on a smaller scale. It just goes to show the kindness and thoughtfulness of so many good people here on Deeperblue.

Alison was an icon for me on Deeperblue, and also in my daily life. I feel her every time I go to the ocean, and remember her so often. Her humour is unmatched and her presence on Deeperblue was like no other.

Thanks for the dedication to Alison and Colin.

there are special people here who appreciate it.

All the best to you and Maggie

Sara-Lise :wave

Wow, Anton, good post! Isn't it true that although life seems to take us far away, there are always those who continue to live on in memory? Somehow, in doing so, it seems possible to hold them close again. I suppose it's a mark of getting on in years as one looks back before moving forward. We lost a few elder members of our Dive Club around Thanksgiving last year to age and long illness; George Vafis & Jack Prodonovitch are missed.
I haven't posted in awhile either. It is great to see some familiar names here.
I'm between assignments: for those of you that know me, I've been in healthcare now for 30 years (yikes!)
-- And I've stepped away from Surgery and moved into Quality of Care audits and Infection Prevention. Both are big issues now in the US. It is gratifying to make Rounds in Critical Care and interact with patients, families and staff in ways that aren't so doggone time-driven.
But I digress....it seems like it was just yesterday when I heard about Allison and Colin.
You know, if anyone has any photos of them in better times, maybe posting them in the Gallery would be a create a nice memorial. I don't have any, does anyone in our community here?
I hope everyone has been well. I pray this new year brings us all good health, happiness, and lots of quality time in the water! I know I need some! :)

Does anyone have a copy of the wonderful memorial photo that was posted here, the one with the diver ascending in the light? It was so appropriate for them and I want a copy so badly.

My DEAR Sir:

Any of us who have experienced tragic and sudden loss, whether due to combat, training, God aweful Mother-Earth, or simple human stupidity have agonized over the same emotions you so eloquently have expressed.

I was not fortunate enough to know THEM. But they knew YOU and the friends here and live on in memory through all inspired

Thank you for being strong enough to share your grief and remembrances.

I espescialy lift a prayer to those of us who have been the takers. We ALWAYS remember.

God Bless. Al+

hey!!!! Good to see you, how's things? You still in the US?
I was in Doha recently, playing rugby! :) then I played on the gravel pitch in Kuwait :crutch

Not a day goes by that I don't remember them.
Stomach in, tits out, breathe... there... all better :) That has been one of the best pieces of advice I have ever received!

That is truly a gem of advice as I believe Old Sarge commented on some years ago. Yes, I am in the US (New Hampshire still)-landed a job here (US and Canada) just in time after 5 months out of work. We have been quite fortunate as the year came to a close.

Guys, you made me think about Alison and Colin too. And that's fine.
Then you made me think of Sarah Lise tits out, and that's fine too.

BTW. It's Anton's birthday. Best wishes for the day.
