Greetings everyone,

I have recently gotten interested in freediving and started doing O2 and CO2 tables at home as first steps to improve my performance (also helps me to relax and get better sleep).

However, I have noticed few distinctive problems. The first one is a throat pain around the area of Adam's apple after holding my breath for a while. The other is feeling that I urgently need to swallow. I get saliva accumulating in my mouth (as normal people do), but after a while I have an urgent need to swallow - I feel like I would be drowning on it otherwise. These feelings come way before I feel like I need to breath.

Any advice how to over come these or what could be the cause? Before I thought it was my use of a pillow under my head but after trying few different setups I still haven't solved the problem.

Cheers

Just very brief: Perhaps you are closing your throat too tight/strongly. The saliva is both natural, but might also be stimulated by diverespons. For now, how come you don't swallow it??? Perhaps because your throat is closed too tight? holding your breath interrupts the natural fairly unconscious process of just swallowing, so that's probably the main reason now. Try swallow. You might however want to practice getting used to the feeling to some extend, since for some the swallowing raises heart rate, or just irritates... But for others it helps I think... Try different approaches..

Sore throat could be from keeping your glottis closed. Try using a noseclip and focus on relaxing your throat. The urge to swallow is normal and something you will get used to. I usually get it before I get contractions.
