It seems that every time I go below 30 meters I get a throat squeeze. My personal best is about 37 meters and every time I go down past 22 or so meters I feel a need to swallow or I do swallow. The last time I dove to about 37 meters I came back up spitting up a lot of blood. What am I doing wrong????? Last diving season I finally figured out the frenzel but have not needed it this season as we did not push ourselves very hard. Can anyone tell me what it is that I am doing wrong??

I look forward to the replies to this, as I too often cough up blood after diving 65 feet or more. Connor has me doing some diaphram stetches, but I can't tell if it they are working - as some days I have no problems and then the next time, I end up coughing up blood (for me, it seems to be coming from my lungs, as I can feel the fluid in them).

It seems to heal fast, as I have no effects after an hour or so (after diving)and then can dive without any problems the next weekend (assuming it is one of those times that all goes well).

Thanks,

Scott

there are loads of threads on this already - do a search, one of the best is here

Be very careful - there are some things you can do like lung stretches, pack and reverse pack stretches, exhale dives to warm up, relaxing more while you dive but most of these are things that you would best learn with an instructor or more experienced diver to make sure you are doing them properly. We have just put a lot on lung squeeze into the AIDA **** Course which will start running from January.

Be very careful. I know a few freedivers who have had to give up completely because of damage due to lung squeeze/throat squeeze and have myself now got pretty annoying chronic cough symptoms due to acid reflux after damaging my throat, probably from freediving.

Just because the bleeding stops does not mean it is not doing you damage - this isn't something to take lightly.

Hi,

We checked couple of years ago one lung squeeze case here in Finland with the doctors: X-rays showed some liquid in the lungs, no blood value changes. CT showed liquid all over the lungs. This person dove about 44m and felt tireness after the dive and coughed some blood. For me it seems that there is a possibility to drown in own liquids in theory and for me this phenomenon reminds a HAPE.

cheers,
