Does anyone have any info on how having a hypoactive thyroid could affect your freediving? and how the drugs used to treat it might interfere?

Hi Sam, am asking myself that question, too. All I have been able to find out so far is this:

If your (I am talking about an underactive thyroid) thyroid is not properly adjusted, it appears that this influences the bodys ability to absorb and use oxygen. This will obviously affect your performance, but I do not think it would cause you problems such as blackout. I was lookig into it in connection with diving on a closed circuit rebreather, and here it becomes more important, as the amount of oxygen you are burning during a dive will influence the amount you need to take.

It seems that the Thyroid medication itself may have been connected with incidents of lower levels of tolerance for high p02. Again, I was looking into this in connection with rebreather/trimix diving, where high p02 are an issue, especially in decompression. It appears that some people on the thyroid drugs were more susceptible to fits due to high oxygen partial pressure. The same appears to be the case for people with overactive thyroids. I guess it's worth considering when diving on Nitrox - I just adjust my decompression planning a little bit to be more conservative, and avoid po2's of 1.6, as are sometimes used in decompression for tech diving.

I have not found any information so far regarding thyroid medication or thyroid problems and freediving/diving. I'd be very interested in any information out there!

sorry annamaria but I found out that mine was OK so I stopped investigating!
