Hi all, Im a surfer and shore fisherman, now broadening to spearfishing (in the height of summer & on hols anyway) for some more fun, and a more involved way of having fun but possibly getting a nice fishy or two.

Ive found my speargun, time will tell if it is too long - 105cm
My winter wetsuit & surfing bits should cover me - get it?
Got a midrange goggle & pipe set

Now alls I need is to improvise a weight belt, find a strap for my filleting knife & buy those fins off ebay!

Welcome Sam. There are a few anglers who spear and a few spearo's who angle. I'm a spearo who angles a bit but I started as an angler and moved to spearing, since when I have never looked back. With angling you can fish most any time but spearing needs certain conditions, mainly decent underwater visibility (vis). I find that if I ever go angling and the water is clear I cannot get rid of the thought that I'd rather be in there with the fish.

I'm getting the feeling its gonna be a steep learing curve to start with but Ive got a couple of friends getting some gear together and I've got about a thousand spots I'd like to try -so now Ive just got to get out there.

Im sure this forum will be a big help as well.

Welcome Bucher. I'm an occasional angler too(at Poole sometimes) - you might want to check out the "Sea Angling for spearos" thread sometime, where the spearos sometimes chat about angling. 105cm is rather long for Dorset but would have been fine in the clear water conditions I experienced last weekend. You say you found it?

Spearfishing for Dummies 1, 2 and 3 by Miles (lots of great info for beginners)

For a weight belt, I'd suggest getting a rubber belt with a Marseille buckle -- not essential but it's seems to be the popular/successful design for spearing. Several companies make them.

Wetsuit? Dive float? Float-line? Most of us start out with regular snorkelling gear but you'll soon find that spearfishing has evolved its own specialised lines of products (e.g. fins, masks, snorkels, wetsuits, floats) tailored to the needs of the activity. For example, take a look at the products at OMER. Somebody near Torbay, possibly Venture Sports in Paignton did have some great deals (v. hard to beat) on spearo/freediving fins from Seacsub a year or so ago. Read the spearfishing for Dummies threads before you sink a lot of money into gear, it might save you quite a bit of time & money in the long run.

Apnea.co.uk, DK Underwater Sports and spearo.co.uk also supply spear fishing gear.
