my first thought would be, someones missing a few tires in Ft lauderdale

Gosh, I've been living in and diving the Fort Lauderdale area for 6 years and have never noticed any of the things reported in the article. It's a stealth disaster. Oh - it's reported by the Associated Press. It could range anywhere from total fiction to melodramatic exaggeration.

Really? It's true. They are all over. My first 7 years of diving were spent all over Lauderdale. Tires were frequently an indication that you were near the wreck. They are usually layed out as mats totally covering the sand. Most are along and in between the 2nd and 3rd reef in the sand. Occasionaly you can find one washed up on Lauderdale by the see or laying across the reef. Seeing all those holes on the way down you would think it would be a lobster haven but can't recall a single instance of even seeing one there. They don't look much different than the day they were put down. Usually pretty barren.

Something that does seem to work well are the concrete pipes. Particularly the "Hollywood Pipes" Everything seems to live in and around them. It's often overlooked but have spent at least a few dives chasing an est. 10' lobster. Never did catch one of them but they are there.;)
