Hi!

The spearfishing season is getting closer up here in the cold Scandinavian waters and I´m beginning to look at my equipment again now after a long winter, and a question has crossed my mind:

My homebuilt speargun has a total length of 82 cm, and the length from the mech to the tip of the gun is about 60 cm. The spear I bought, wich was the shortest one available, is 125 cm long. I guess that a long spear means a more accurate shot, but ít seems like unnecessarerly long to me.
It would be more convinient with a shorter one.
So, I thought of shorten the spear. What do you guys think about this plans? Anyone whos has any experience from this, or some thoughts?

By the way...

I am also building a new speargun now. It will be the opposite of my first one, wich I spent a lot of time on decorating with ebony inlays (as can be seen at my profile pic). This time it will be simple and first and foremost functional, made out of ice hockey sticks. Maybe I will post some pics of this project later, or ask you guys for advices while building it.

Best regards,
Johan, Sweden.

does the long spear shoot straight and not drop?
is there a rail along the entire spear?

The water I do my spearfishing in is dark and merky, so there are never opportunity to shoot at fish from more than a short distance. This fact makes me think that the shooting accuracy of the gun on a far range isn´t as important as it would be in clear waters. But I haven´t been able to see if the spear drops on longer distances, but it has been very accurate at 1-2 meters. The length from the mech to the guntip is about 60 cm, so there isn´t rail under the whole shaft.

So, a shorter shaft would be more convinient and good even if it makes the shots less accurate on longer distances.

I wounder if shafts from other manufacturers fits the mechanism I bought from Totemsub, so that it would be possible to buy a shorter one? Do you have any recommendations?

10% shorter shaft would be ~25% faster. Would it be benefit to you?
