Re: Europeans, watch RTL channel.

If you see the video, you will understand why he didn't do as well as in training....

Well done Tom!!!!!

PS: Nice suit man!

Re: Europeans, watch RTL channel.

Well done Tom - under those circumstances, that was an amazing performance.... 'monkey in a cage' springs to mind

Re: Europeans, watch RTL channel.

SanSan, thanx for the video, it was interesting. I could understand, why Tom did "only" more then 13 minutes.

BTW: after 12 minutes he did some movement, which looked like he would breath. Did he drink from the water, or do you know what that was?

Anyway congratulations Tom - in these conditions I think this performance was a "world record".

Re: Europeans, watch RTL channel.

Amazing performance!

I saw the thing after 12 minutes, which looked like he was trying to breathe. I think it was some kind of contractions.

Well done Tom!

Re: Europeans, watch RTL channel.

I do something similar with air from my lungs. I fill my cheeks and push it pack - in the rythm of my contractions.

Re: Europeans, watch RTL channel.

To put that in perspective - some of the best static apneists got an all-expenses paid trip to Monaco to do static in front of Tara Reid.

The current WR holder gets put in a tank in Germany and harrassed by Bon Jovi. Something's wrong there :duh

Can anyone translate the main points of Tom's commentary after he surfaced?

Re: Europeans, watch RTL channel.

Don't get me wrong - I really appreciate what Tom does for freediving. I think he's a great guy and an absolutely amazing freediver.
But doing statics in a TV studio, monkey-in-a-cage-style, in front of shouting and screaming audience (which knows nothing about freediving), with Jon Bon Jovi and Ritchie Sambora and - above all - hyperventilating with pure O2... Come on, gimme a break. That's irresponsible and makes people think that we, freedivers, are something totally bizzare. And stupid.

Re: Europeans, watch RTL channel.

Having Bon Jovi bang on the tank near the end wouldnt have helped :duh If you watch closly when he starts getting contractions it looks like he is sucking water in and spitting it out. Any ideas?

So U think holding ur breath everywhere u can isnt stupid and bizzare?

I don't think Tom acted irresponsible. After all nobody was talking and mixing this with freediving it was just a record setting. Actualy it would be great if he'd mention it coz it would have been a great promotion of the sport. I dont think the people where thinking its stupid. More like amazaing. And there were doctors there and all the equipement. And the monkey in the cage. Sure it looked stupid for a few that know whats going on but for all other?

If u think this is stupid what d u then think of Patricks -209m no-limits?

Re: Europeans, watch RTL channel.

Today there will be a report on the record setting at RTL television at 19:10 GMT+2.

Hopefully Tom will explain how it was from his point of view.

As for sucking the watter in his mouth i would guess its some psyhological thing. Im also sucking the air in and out of my mask during statics to relees the pressure from the contractions and i cant concentrate better.

Re: Europeans, watch RTL channel.

There was a "little" sign on his wetsuit: Apnea. He didn't talk about our sport/activity perhaps because there was no time for that (though there was time for JBJ's funny stories.. this is show business). It would have been nice to say some sentences about freediving, it would explain the record attempt also better.

According to my experiences, doing a static while sitting on a chair is more difficult, than doing it normally , floating on the water.

Re: Europeans, watch RTL channel.

yesterday the reportes have blaimed Bon Jovi for the failed attempt. They said the worst was when he was hitting on Toms grilfriend. He was able to hear everything going on outside so... Tom didn't comment much. Actualy he said nothing about the atempt and didn't blame anybody. The reporters again messed up some things saying that in Tom allways breathes pure oxygen before apnea... I had the same problems with the media. They never get it right.

Re: Europeans, watch RTL channel.

It almost looked as he was "breathing" the water..
When we see the clip from 9 minutes and on, you can clearly see that he is having contractions, it looks really hard! And sitting on a chair:duh very good performance considering the conditions..

Hello from Boston,

right now Martin Stepanek and I doing an interesting study in many different fields of freediving physiology. We already have very astonishing data and will be publishing it when we have the O.K. by the doctors. We are pretty busy so I haven`t had the time to reply to this thread.

For me the whole thing was great fun although I didn`t break a record. Although I didn`t have so much time to prepare myself since I had just arrived from Egypt I had quite good results in training. At the last preparation day I did a 17m30s dive with the RTL crew which felt easy, so I was optimistic.

But in the show itself it wasn`t that easy. I had expected it will be a little more difficult with millions of spectators in the sitting position but it was actually much more than that. In the preparation phase Bon Jovi played about 30m next to me it was very hard to concentrate since it was very loud. But as I am used to difficult situations I thought it is still managable. However when I was down on the chair I didn`t sit comfortably as the weight wasn`t equally distributed over my body. I thought It would take more energy to correct the lead than just to stay like this. Unlike in training at 8min the breathing reflex started at 4min. As the limitation for me at those dives was the high CO2 levels and not the O2 saturation I knew it would be a struggle. So it was, and instead of getting over the limit I decided to surface cleanly and was satisfied with myself, as I did my best.

Many people wonder why I didn`t do more, because many people did dives around 14 minutes and rumors say that Pellizari did already 19 minuits. I actually don`t care as I never wanted the record that badly. I had a lot of fun there with many nice people and had a very exciting show as you are not often on TV in front of millions of people.

For the people who blamed me for acting irresponsible... You can`t imagine how much of positive response I got. All the people there were impressed and interested in how we do and how they can learn breathholding. I have received so many mails saying that it was amazing. How can this harm? I would have loved to talk a little more about the sport actually they also wanted to present the records saying that it is a real sport, but sometimes you can`t influence the media...

I hope you got some idea about what was going on...

All the best, Tom
