Toxic pufferfish migrating to the Med

It is since 2005 the Red Sea poisonous puffer fish Lagocephalus sceleratus started to appear in Greek waters near Crete. Now, it is the first time it appeared as far as Athens. Scientists blame global warming for the migration of the invasive species.


This puffer fish can be mistaken for a sardine by fishers not knowing it, but it should not be eaten because the skin and internal organs contain a neurotoxin that paralyzes the nervous and respiratory systems. The toxin is not affected by heat or cooking. Puffer fish is eaten only in Japan (known as fugu); the poisonous organs are removed from the special cooks on the day the fish is caught.
