Aloha all,
I have a question regarding a trachea squeeze. About 2 and a half weeks ago I went diving, it was maybe my 3rd dive that week. Spearfishing with a buddy we were no more than 60 feet or so when I came up from a dive and immediately started coughing uncontrollably. One thing I’ll say is that I didn’t check for blood that day as I wasn’t aware of the fact that it was a symptom for what I was experiencing at the moment. I thought it was weird bc 60 feet is a depth my buddy and I are extremely comfortable at and have been diving that depth since about November 2022. We usually dive anywhere between 60-80 depending on the spot and what’s necessary. About 3 weeks prior we had hit 100 feet for the first time rather comfortably with a bottom time of about 1:50. We hadn’t hit it since as we were really just looking to PB that day. Following the dive where I felt a squeeze in my upper sternum into my throat area I felt fine about a day later and FELT completely healed 2 days after. On the third day I dove again and was diving at 80 feet the entirety of the day, feeling great, fresh and rejuvenated. Then three days later I did some freedive training with a buddy and hit another PB of 35.5 meters which felt great until about the last 5 feet of the dive where I got strong contractions and had a hard time EQ so I immediately turned around and head to the surface. No symptoms when I surfaced so I continued. About three dives later after hitting 30, 27, and 25, I felt the symptoms begin to return. While surfacing from my 25m dive I immediately started coughing and as I checked for blood I noticed that I had a little less than a pennys worth of it when spitting. I halted the dive and called it a day. The most logical reason for my second squeeze is probably the fact that I hit another PB about a week after my first squeeze, thinking I was healed from my first one. But for me the most pressing question is how my first squeeze came about at a depth I am a extremely comfortable in and dive all the time. The one distinguishing factor of that day I’ll mention for context is that that morning I had a big cup of matcha which I’ve never done before a dive (probably a terrible idea). This raised my heart rate a lot and I will say I was more tense than usual that day while laying on the bottom and did feel the urge to come up a little sooner than normal. Not sure if this contributed to my initial squeeze at a relatively shallow depth but just wanted to mention.
I’m 25 years old. Been diving for about 16 months.
Been in that 60+ range for about 8 months, 70+ for about 5 months and 80 for about 2.
Bottom time between 1:50-2:25.
I’ve watched and read about every trachea squeeze forum and video there is to see on the internet but haven’t found anything that covers my experience. I’ve been diving with some pretty advanced free divers and spearos and have had my technique tightened up relative to the level of where I’m currently diving right now but am always learning and seeking knowledge and growth.
As of now I will be taking at least a two week break and monitoring my body and going slow when I return. If anyone has any input especially on my initial squeeze that would be extremely helpful to me.

Aloha

I think you got it perfectly right that subsequent squeeze was caused by not healing previous one completely, for me personally, it take about 2 weeks to heal completely, 1 week or 10 days are not enough for me. When not healed, even 10 - 15m depths can cause spitting blood again.
Regarding squeeze at comfortable depth, in the past following things matter, all related to not allowing me to be completely relaxed on dive:
hydration (when dehydrated, EQ do not work correctly, lot of time spent on it, tense)
water temperature - even when i feel comfortable in wetsuit, when i feel sudden change of temperature (termocline) on my face that i was not expecting can cause tensiness, warmup dives helps me with it.
currents that make me feel uncomfortable
bad sleep, bad nutrition causing high heart rate - when it do not go away after warmup dives when MDR should kicks in, i am extra carefull
head position on ascend, when contractions come in, i used to look up to to see the surface and this is bad

I would never mix PB like depth and depth time, when going for depth time, i stay not more than half of my depth PB (50/2=@25m). But i am not spearfisher so your motivation might be different . For me key to prevent squeezes is complete relaxation during dive and

Thanks for the response bro. I thought no one would ever respond lol
