OK so I've been diving as a spearo for a while now but, a few weeks ago i quit smoking. now am starting to feel the health benefits coming into play and i want to run with them, so does anyone have some beginner level work outs and exercises for me to be cracking on with? i've had a look on youtube but its quite varied and experience levels are rarely mentioned.

Best thing is spend time in the water and see what you're capable of. Then you can focus on the weak points (if any). Typical things to look for are
endurance
breathhold time
ear clearing
comfort in the water

ive got a grasp of my limits are when diving in the sea and now i want to push them but with safety in mind i would like some pool an dry exercises to do as my day to day fitness routine.

A simple routine would be 3 days a week of O2 tables and 3 days a week of cO2 tables. Then spend time running, biking, or in the pool with a kickboard and fins from 3 to 6 days a week.
For the active workouts, trade between aerobic (slow) workouts, moderate ones (fast alternating with slow bursts), and hard (all out wind sprints followed by a brief rest). How much of each and how long each is will depend on your condition.Push yourself, but don't make it so hard that you give up.

i have started running and "lots of little" weight lifting, also mild dynamic apnea training which has taken me to a 3 min dry breath hold but one thing i dont get and need some answers for is even with the mammalian dive reflex my underwater breath hold is only about a 1 minute????? wtf?

Hi Charlie!

Welcome to DB!

Congratulations with your turn to a healthier lifestyle!

I would put high on your list: - find a BUDDY!
Since you want to explore your limits you'll need a buddy to do that. Otherwise you can only challenge yourself on soft dry land. Apnea walks and static breath-holds are the two most used dry practises. As a freediver you want to develop mind-control, relaxation, flexibility, strength, and lactic acid tolerance. Also you want to learn to equalise really well. Much of this can be done on land and in the pool. However freediving without a buddy is not much fun for me because I cannot venture into lactic and struggle phase at all. And I really like to test and see how my training produces results and insights.

So find a buddy!

Alternatively you can safe up for a freediving vacation and join db members or a course.

About the minute thing, it's a matter of getting used to water. You need to change your focus from breath-holding to learning and relaxing. Put the watch aside and do say 10 breath-holds of say 50% effort level, come up when you feel you got about half left in the tank. - don't be anal about the 50% number... just a series of easy dives, with a relaxed interval and a BUDDY...

Freediving is a tricky thing when you aim for numerical improvements. Your mind turns to focus on guessing how far you are and how much you can do. This uses a lot of O2!!! So the best results will be when you've given up the numbers, relax go and just witness yourself doing everything by itself.

I'm beginning to feel that freediving is about diving without numbers.

Love, courage and Water,

Kars

thanks for all the advice guys the more i read and the more tips i get from here the more i realize im just being a bit impatient. i now have a buddy and my routine is taking shape have started doing a little zazen meditation every day and will start doing 10mins before each dive to get my heart rate down.
