traveling through Hong Kong with spearguns??

Can any help me out with what to do with traveling through Hong Kong with my spearguns?

Most cheap flights to NZ from UK are via HK, but my freind got questioned and nearly arrested in HK last year beacuse he had his spearguns on him, even though they were checked in and only in HK for a connecting flight.

how can i get around this? how can I obtain a permit in advance? anybody had a simalr experience?
