Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on flying with a monofin? I'm heading to Ft. Lauderdale next week, and I want to take it with me. However, I'm VERY fearful of it getting damaged, and would want to carry it on. Which, I suspect, will NOT be allowed (US Air). Any tips or info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks,

Todd

A pretty well tested solution is making a "plywood sandwich" in your monobag, and putting your mono in between. Don't have to be that thick. So cut 2 roughly monofin shaped pieces that fit into your bag.

I usually also attach a "fragile - handle with care" sticker on it, but I'm not sure it does anything but provoke them

Sometimes we just put several fins in one bag and they generally seem to arrive in one piece.

However, the best solution I've seen so far was simply using a card board box - I'll have to attach a photo or it doesn't make much sense...

My daughter carried hers on in a plastic bag. They can stow it up by the baby carriages and stuff.
Be advised - the glue or neoprene or something on some fins will set off the explosives sniffers - they just check the fin out and off you go.

Todd,

Unirdna is the expert on "carry on" monfins. Try a PM.

im trying to take a monofin to egypt on thomas cook flight, are they strict?, i've been told to try and "blag" it onboard coz technically its too big for hand luggage, but if i keep saying "the last person said it was ok" this may work apparently? any guidance

I've successfully used the box it came in several times. I just check it. Carrying it on is too risky - you may end up having to gate check it - then the fin goes in the luggage in the soft fin bag. (happened to me)
I've even lent the box to others - all with good results. Just have the airline folks put lots of 'Fragile' stickers on it.

As Jome indicated - simple is best. Just reinforce the box with tape and make sure there is a spacer in there to keep the blade from flopping around. FYI - on my last flight I actually saw the luggage handlers read the Fragile stickers and set the fin aside in order to load it last - so it didn't get stuff piled on it.

They don't usually fit in suitcases. I used a mirror box from FedEx last time I flew. The box got trashed but the fin was fine! I kept the piece of wood that was used when my fin was shipped to me as extra protection for the blade also. Be creative - if you are bringing a beach towel, wrap and tape that around the blade too, then it's packed and useful! Don't forget to bring spare tape (or plan to buy some) so that you can seal up your box again for the return journey.
