When I go down, my ears and sinuses hurt like hell! (I have allergies and am always stuffed up.)

On scuba it takes me 15 minutes to get to 40 feet. When freediving...well, let's just say I don't get very far.

Any ideas folks?

niel med nasal rinse or sterimar get them tubes cleared
anti hystamines for your allergies and worst case ent specialist to see if there is an underlying problem

Dragonfly , you've posted on an open forum with a medical problem and like everyone who does this there can only be one correct response .
See a specialist , in this case an ENT specialist .
We can give advice about what we think the problem is but there is no way to be sure of a diagnosis .
It sounds as if allergies are causing a blockage in your sinuses or you could have a sinusitus or maybe you snuffled too much coke :naughty ( joking ) or it could be something much , much worse , this last one is very unlikely but only a specialist can tell you .
I know most ENT people recommend Otrivine nasal spray for diving , this can help with equalization problems even if the sinuses aren't blocked ( my wife has narrow eustachian tubes and it helps her to equalize when scuba-diving ) .
As an aside , ENT hate people putting stuff in their ears , any stuff ,they really don't recommend it .
One little trick is to bring your chin towards your chest when equalizing ,
some people find this is easier , sometimes cranning the neck to see where the bottem is can make equalizing harder .
These are titbits which can be useful but you need to see a doctor to be 100% sure your taking the right action .
SO DON'T DELAY SEE A DOC' TODAY :) .
Regards ,
Dave .

First off, I see this is your first post.welcome to DB. If you go see an ENT, contact D.A.N. and they will refer a doctor to you in your area that has the knowledge of dive physiology. It takes just a few minutes to do this on the website and they respond very quickly.
I have a friend that has issues with equalising with scuba as well as freediving. It would take him forever to go just 30 feet. He uses Docs Pro Plugs and can now swim down with scuba or freediving as fast as he can swim. Thats a pretty cheap fix. Maybe something to try.

of co
urse after seeking medical advice an alternative therapy you could try is the emmett technique. it works from the bottom up, over your diaphragm across your chest down the throat and then onto your sinuses, its like emptying a bath you've got to "pull the plug out first." hope alls going well

Thought you won't supposed to dive when blocked up? I would see your GP. From personal experience, bypassing the GP and going straight to a specialist has its risks.
