Hi everyone,

I'll be taking a trip down to Tulum Mexico on the Mayan Riviera in March and I'm planning on some pretty epic diving. I wondered if anyone had any experience freediving there and more importantly spearfishing. I can't seem to find any concrete info on spearfishing other than it is illegal on Cozumel (the island right off of Tulum). Does anyone have any info on spearfishing off the reefs down there or legality of bringing spearguns/spearfishing at all?

Thanks!

Scott

no info on spearfishing there sorry, but i went to tulum, what an awesome place:) have fun..
i did go on a fishing trip in Cancun though and the skipper was telling me they spearfish a lot..

Yea it would be a pretty big bummer to arrive and have the new gun i made yoinked by customs. I'm debating removing the pricy hardware from the stock and putting those parts in my bag and pack the stock and shaft in another so the most I'd be out was a stock and a shaft. Any info on sources on spearfishing laws and regulations at all in mexico would be really helpful.

Thanks,

scott

You can spearfish on Cozumel, but only in very specific places.

The entire east side of the island is open for it, but good luck finding a boat. You can also spear to the north on the east side- Barracuda reef. It's deep and the current is fast so the only people I know who spearfish there are on scuba- not my cup of tea.

I've never been over to Tulum, but I have freedove down there many times- sometimes right along with the scuba divers on the charter boat.

Let us know what you find out.

Jon

The spearfishing regs in Mexico are the same as fishing regs in terms of limits, etc and to spearfish legally you need a fishing license. There are some restricted areas but usually (as far as I know anyway) there are also fishing restrictions in these areas also. (Cabo Pulmo marine park
for instance)

so how did it go? I am going there in a couple of weeks ... any info will be pretty useful. Cheers
