Two reasons among others:
1) A one piece suit requires a zipper somewhere. The zipper creates some stiffness and leaks some water. The stiffness can affect inhalation volume, and the leakage can affect becoming cold sooner.
2) If you are in the water for a very long time, peeling a two piece half way up and half way down provides convenient access to nature without taking off the whole suit. Now aren't you glad you asked?rofl

The suits are very warm because they cling close to the skin not allowing water to flush in and out. They have no zip which also helps to keep them warm I could'nt myself being able to get into a one piece suit with the same idea. They can be a little claustrophobic at first but are usually no problem and are as i say nice and warm.

I have been a long time fan of one-peices (cheap, flexible, just one thing to carry), but I understand the reason for the freediver 2 piece now that I have my Elios 2 piece high waist.
The big problem is it is nearlly impossible to make a one peice that doesn't produce a water pocket when you move around. If you bend forward you get a water pocket in a one peice and that water has to come from somewhere. If you extend you arms it is even worse, because now the lateral sides are stretched, but the front and back are often loose (depending on your shape).
The 2 piece has a beaver tail and when you twist the jacket slide up and down along the pant. This flexability means fewer water pockets on you skin, and more warmth.
This also goes to why freediver prefer high waist to "farmer-john" aka overalls.
The farmer-john breaks the independence of movement because you tie the shoulders all the way down to the legs again, and many people and even worse for women have chests that stick out from their body. The farmer john is pulling away from the body right below the chest and produces a spot for water to flow into. The jacket still suffers from this problem a little bit, but the total leverage to pull away from you chest is less if it ends at the crotch rather than the leg.

Ah thank you all. You have all been very help full. I was thinking of buying a new suit and with heading for the new Cressi competition. I was thinking of getting the 7mm for winter. Would a suit like that stand up to 8 degree celceus water?

I have the cressi 5mm and as long as its a good fit i find it fine in 12-14 degree i used it for surfing in about 10 and was warm and toasty nearly too warm. I'd say the 7 should be fine but some otheres may be used to that temp and that suit in particular

I used a 5mm Elios two peice right up to this weekend for water down to 6-7degC feeling OK.
With a 2mm Cressi vest underneath this weekend was nice and comfortable for approx. 1hr in 7deg @ surface down to 25m. Good gloves and socks really help.
A good fitting 5mm will be warmer than a bad fitting 7mm when you're moving around.

So a good fitting 7mm would be warmer. Is it harder to get thicker suits to fit? So if the 7mm fits wear it? If not go the better fitting 5mm? I just find 5mm's a little in the middle suit, to hot for summer not enough warmth for winter...I may have to try a few suits on before i go buying. Thank you all you've all been big helps.
